About a year ago I bought a new windows lab top from costco. I have not opened it up yet as my old HP is still kicking but just about done. So before I go get the new one and set up I have been wondering whether I should sell it and go with a Mac laptop instead. I am also in need of a new phone and have been thinking about an Iphone instead of anther android phone.

I know from the desktop thread those of you that are mac guys you will all pretty much say yes absolutely do it. But is it really that easy. Or is it more of a 50/50 deal in terms of security, ease of use, etc.

Oh, and budget matters. There is limited funds to upgrade.

Thanks all.

Based on your thread title it sounds as though you’ve already bought a Mac.

If you're going to go Mac go all the way. I only use windows 11 where I'm paid to use it.

Yes, go Apple. You need one simple system for both of you.

MacBook Neo is the low cost laptop.

Since budget matters, use the brand new laptop you already own rather than lose money selling it and spending more money on a MacBook.

On the other hand, since you haven’t opened it, can you return it at Costco?

Thanks guys. Looks like a mac book air 13" is $699 and the 15" $899 both 16gb memory and 256 storage at costco.

The laptop I got at costco is a windows 11 17" screen I am thinking it is 32 gb and 512 memory.

I bought a MacMini last year to replace an aging Apple desktop. It’s a great companion to our Apple Watch’s, headphones, airbuds , iPhones, AppleTV, iPads. Did I miss anything? As said, it is easier to go ‘all in’.

I’m committed to Windows for the most part, due to applications I use for work. Some of the software I use just isn’t written for Mac, and my employer provides the laptop, so it’s a non-issue for me.

At home, though, I’m on the verge of switching from Windows to Mac entirely. When my desktop machine gives up or requires major upgrades, I’ll switch.

Almost ten years ago I bought a 2012 MacBook Pro. It was easy to learn, though heavy and slow. With help from downtownv, Leeann, and some other members here, I was able to swap the hard drive from a spinner to a solid-state and upgrade the operating system. To this day, it runs like a champ.

A year or so ago, I bought a new MacBook Air. Why? Because it’s light! It’s no less the powerhouse than the old MBP, but it’s way easy to travel with. Slip it into a case and into a backpack, and I’m off and running, without a weight penalty. Battery life is outstanding, I can do anything with it that I can do on my Windows desktop machine, and it’s quick. Oh, and migration from the old Pro to the new Air was ridiculously easy!

When you’re used to Windows, there are a lot of keyboard shortcuts to re-learn — that’s part of the learning curve. But that curve overall is pretty short.

ORC, you mention the 15” Air… I’d recommend getting hands on both the 13” and the 15” before deciding. I really thought I wanted the 15”, and surprised myself deciding to go with the 13”. If you need to connect to a larger desktop monitor for “non-laptop use," that’s pretty easy to do, too.

Certainly. I hope it helps in your decision making process.

There's not a Costco nearby, so I just looked at Best Buy's website, where the 15" Air starts at $1299 (16/512). If I had seen it for the $899 you mentioned, I may have grabbed it! Big Grin

Truly, though, I'm content with the 13", and the ability to connect to an external monitor (or a ginormous TV) when I need or want to.

Be aware that those prices are for the last generation with M4 chip. Which is just fine for your needs. If you can actually find one at that price I would absolutely jump on it. Costco.com shows both those units out of stock and not available for shipping or pickup.

And yes I am one of those Apple fan boys who say you should absolutely without doubt and without hesitation shouldswitch completely to apple ecosystem.

My son is a IT nerd and when my laptop went tits up, he said that there just were no good windows at that time. He suggested I go with apple which I did and I could not be happier several years later. So much better than having to deal with windows BS all the time.

I would mess with my wife’s Macs in her classroom, and I just couldn’t stand the OS or the stupid round mice. Add to that, the association of leftism in the Apple world as opposed to the more conservative of PC’s, I really never considered Macs.

Before Windows 8 was released as standalone software, it was in the newest PC’s in the stores. I would mess with it, and in doing so, I determined I REALLY didn’t like it. AFAIWC, it was another Coca-Cola replacing Coke with New Coke fiasco.

The day the standalone software was released, I went to an Apple Store and got me a late 2012 Mac mini. I was a computer enthusiast, and learning Mac OS reignited my interest in the hobby.

I still had a PC desktop, but my wife and I used it only when we had to for work. It would quiet for months at a time until the free Windows 10 upgrade was released. It didn’t make me switch back, but I finally wasn’t so down on MS anymore.

I currently run an M4 Mac mini. My original late 2012 HDD failed after 13 years, but the late 2012 server, I picked up off of eBay, is still running and attached to my music system by its optical speaker out they had back then.

Lastly, I used Windows all during my career, and I didn’t have a problem with 10 on up. Even so, I’m a Mac guy with no current plans on returning to PC.

The M4 Mac Mini is a beast for what it costs. Go with higher ram than the base model. I have a M1 in the office and a M4 Pro mini in my studio. Least expensive Macs.

I run Adobe Lightroom Classic, and it is a memory hog. Spring for the more memory models.
