Anybody get Costochondritis?
Inflammation of the cartilage that joins your ribs to your sternum (breastbone). I thought I strained my pecs but my ortho PA said not.

Mine is from seated pectoral extensions. I used to be an amateur bodybuilder but the older I get my "workouts" are more "stretching exercises w/resistance."

Back on point. Any SFrs have it? Do you do anything besides rest and nsaids?

thnx

Got it wrestling in high school. Most of us did. At some point, someone is going to slam you just well enough to crack your sternum. "Healing" took years, and just trying not to aggravate it. I was able to get it it pop by taking a deep breath and flexing well into my 30's. It just stopped hurting somewhere in my mid-20's. The cartilage in your rib cage doesn't really like to heal, if ever.

Now, what I had specifically may be different than what you've done, but costochondritis is what the doc diagnosed my problem as. Maybe it is, or was, a catch-all term for sternum issues. I don't know. Basically, be careful with it is my advice. Razz

Yes I have had it several times. The first time I thought it was a heart attack or similar. The doc told me what it was and from working out my chest. YES rest and NSAIDs. God Bless Smile

Yes, two different locations. First was just next to the sternum, and it took months to go away. It flares up occasionally still but not so bad. The first time it sent me to the insta-care just to be sure it wasn't a heart attack.

The second is at 3 o'clock just above the bottom rib. That's been intermittent for a couple of years, and kind of low grade rather than acutely painful.

Time and avoiding what sets it off is all you can do. I avoid NSAIDS to the greatest extent possible, but they do help relieve the pain.

Had it once years ago, although I cannot recall what triggered / caused it, but I absolutely remember it being very painful and slow to heal.

General rest and ‘taking it easy’ supplemented by otc meds was what the doc instructed.

I initially thought that I had a fractured rib or two.

Had it for years before I self-diagnosed it. Thought I was having a heart attack(s) over the years and in typical man fashion did nothing to have it checked out. I noticed that when I massaged the area, it would recreate the pain so I deduced it wasn’t inside the chest cavity but on the surface. Did some reading and found the condition.

I’m not sure if that’s what I had, but after a 10’ fall backwards off the top of a truck, I broke 2 ribs and a fractured vertebrae, among other things. My sternum and surrounding area was incredibly sore for about 6 months. I’m assuming that the cartilage surrounding the sternum was severely bruised. The doctor told me not to worry about it too much and it did improve over time with plenty of rest. I had much bigger issues to worry about at the time.

Many years ago, when I went from weighted dips on a 45 degree angle bar to very narrow ones which I barely fit in.

I just stopped any weighted dips for 6 weeks and it healed up.

Glad I opened this thread and didn’t continue to think it was the latest rant about a bulk sales store.

Now I know what bothers me from time to time, and for me it’s no doubt due to the “poor posture” cause that the AI response mentioned.
