Baltimore City is facing a devastating reality as the latest round of state test scores are released.

Project Baltimore analyzed the results and found a shocking number of Baltimore City schools where not a single student is doing math at grade level.

“We're not living up to our potential,” said Jovani Patterson, a Baltimore resident who made headlines in January 2022, when he filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City Schools. The suit claims the district is failing to educate students and, in the process, misusing taxpayer funds.

“We, the taxpayer, are funding our own demise,” Patterson said at the time.

Patterson was born in Baltimore. He has seen the failures firsthand. But when Project Baltimore showed him the latest test results for the city, he was momentarily rendered speechless.

“My immediate reaction is, take your kids out of these schools,” said Patterson.

The Maryland State Department of Education recently released the 2022 state test results known as MCAP, Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program.

Baltimore City’s math scores were the lowest in the state. Just 7 percent of third through eighth graders tested proficient in math, which means 93 percent could not do math at grade level.

But that’s not all; Project Baltimore combed through the scores at all 150 City Schools where the state math test was given.

Project Baltimore found, in 23 Baltimore City schools, there were zero students who tested proficient in math. Not a single student.

“It just sounds like these schools, now, have turned into essentially babysitters with no accountability,” said Patterson. “This is the future of our city. We’ve got to change this.”

Among the list of 23 schools, there are 10 high schools, eight elementary schools, three Middle/High schools and two Elementary/Middle schools.

Exactly 2,000 students, in total, took the state math test at these schools. Not one could do math at grade level.

“These kids can't do math. You're not preparing them to buy groceries. You're not preparing them to do accounting, to count their own money. You're not preparing them to read contracts and negotiate salaries,” said Patterson.

The answer, obviously, is the same as it always has been.

More teachers, higher pay, fewer students per teacher, more days off for teachers, on and on.

The only math that the youth in these decaying cities know is 1) how many bullets go in a magazine, 2) keeping track of pills and bags of weed, and 3) counting ten dollar bills.

Yes, clearly they need more money to fix this.

Just like East Germany before they finally joined the west. Both parents had to work, kids were taken to the government facility for care. Kids 4-5 years old still wearing diapers because nobody available to potty train them. And I know this to be true because members of my wife's family experienced it.

One of the first things I learned when I went thru the US Army instructor training program was "to teach, you have to know more than the students!

Yup. More day care and social/political indoctrination camps than schools, these days.

AS a side note, the schools around here are doing better than Baltimore by a long shot, but in the grand scheme of things are failing miserably. The last time students were tested, only around 1/3 of them were at grade level in math and English.

Perhaps because of this the last 3 years the school bond initiatives and overrides have been shot down pretty hard on election day. They're having to learn to live within their budgets just like normal people.

...and further dumbing-down of the math curriculum already taught (which has been dumbed-down already). "State level" math should be a cakewalk for most students, and yet I have seen young people working as cashiers who can't do very simple addition/subtraction problems in their heads.

These schools are war zones. The kids carry knives and guns and brass knuckles and drugs. The kids beat up their teachers weekly. Now ask, what respectable teacher is going to willingly work in this environment?? All the good teachers move to “less dangerous” school districts. What’s left is the “welfare” teachers. The teachers that live in the same shithole, that collect a paycheck and don’t give a shit. And to be fair, it’s hard to give a shit when the kids flat refuse to sit down and learn.

The kids can basically walk around the school, hang out with their friends, play music on their cell phones all day, and the administration can’t do a damn thing about it. Nothing. The law says you have to GO to school. The law does not state that they have to pay attention and actually try to learn something. I work in a school and I’ve been told this time and time again by students. They bring a pillow/blanket from home , park their ass in a corner of the classroom, and sleep until lunch time. After lunch, nap until the bus comes to get them. No learning at all. Their behavior is SO bad that they could literally be suspended from school every single day, which is apparently against the law so these “special” students can only be suspended just a handful of times per year , for the worst of the worst infractions.
