Everybody likes to say that whoever calls first is likely to be believed the most. I take from this that the perpetrators called in first. Why didn't the victims? There is no indication that they did, just the interview with the police after the fact. Had it not been for the surveillance video, the perps' account would have been at least somewhat plausible. If you have to shoot somebody, call it in right away. (After it is safe.)
The victims drove to the nearest police station and made a report, apparently it was a short distance away because the perps drove less than a mile before calling 911 and it says in the story that the victims made their report at the station a short time later. But yes, sooner is better.

A short time later, the woman’s boyfriend came to police headquarters to tell officers what happened. Police say Warren’s story about being robbed fell apart after they spoke to the man and his girlfriend, as well as speaking to witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and speaking again to Warren and McKenzie.
