Finally refinished a Mosin M44 Login/Join

I fully understand that refinishing older guns generally devalues them. That said, refinishing and already refinished older gun shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.

When I bought this M44 the original reddish hue was already replaced with a walnut looking stain job. It looked good and was done decently enough but I decided to redo it more for a project than anything else.

It was just a matter of removing the old finish, applying a few coats of Minwax number 225, red mahogany, and then topping it off with a few coats of tru oil. Patience is always key making sure everything is fully dry before taking the next step. I know it may appear too glossy for some but it is to my liking and if I change my mind some triple zero steel wool is already on hand.

I did the same thing to my m44 and used a red dye stain and when I sold it the “collectors” used that as an excuse to low ball me. What made it really fun was that I made a new bent bolt handle using the original knob off of the old handle and welded and blended it on so well it looked like a factory bent bolt handle for a pu sniper. But the serial numbers all matched and it really confused the hell out of them. Gave me a giggle, if you ever sell it some private party buyer will appreciate the job you did. I sold mine for 400 bucks, pretty good considering I got it for 60 bucks back in the day

This is in keeping with many surplus firearm efforts over the years. You did great. Tommy L Bish created incredible sporters out of battle rifles, as an example.

I have never liked Mosins but yours looks great. I think you did a great job. It just might be the best looking Mosin I’ve seen.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment. It was a fun project albeit one that tested patience. It was so tempting to just rush it when applying the coats but each process got at least 24 hours in between.

The M38 and M44 are very similar, both being Mosin-Nagant carbines of basically identical dimensions and design. The main difference is that the M44 has a side-mounted folding spike bayonet.

M38 on top; M44s in the middle
