British navy group: ‘Potential hijack’ of ship off UAE coast

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The British navy warned Tuesday of a "potential hijack" of a ship off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in the Gulf of Oman, without elaborating.

The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations initially warned ships Tuesday that "an incident is currently underway" off the coast of Fujairah. Hours later, they said the incident was a "potential hijack." They did not elaborate.

The U.S. military's Mideast-based 5th Fleet and the British Defense Ministry did not immediately return calls for comment. The Emirati government did not immediately acknowledge the incident.

Earlier, four oil tankers announced around the same time via their Automatic Identification System trackers that they were "not under command," according to MarineTraffic.com. That typically means a vessel has lost power and can no longer steer.

An Oman Royal Air Force Airbus C-295MPA, a maritime patrol aircraft, was flying over the area where the ships were, according to data from FlightRadar24.com.

The event comes just days after a drone struck an oil tanker linked to an Israeli billionaire off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members. The West blamed Iran for the attack, which marked the first known assault to have killed civilians in the yearslong shadow war targeting commercial vessels in the region.

Iran denied playing any role in the incident, though Tehran and its allied militias have used similar "suicide" drones in attacks previously.

Israel, the United States and United Kingdom vowed a "collective response" to the attack, without elaborating.

Will we learn our lesson, oil sovereignty is key to stability in that region, once the USA needs none of the middle east oil, these problems stop, because oil prices can no longer be manipulated by acts of terror.

Trump had it right, the proof is in the actions post Trump as Buydem screws up US energy policy putting the middle east oil supply back in play.

I'm pretty certain they're hoping somebody eventually loses their cool, goes a bit (?) overboard in their response, and they gain international sympathy as a result.

Though, TBH, I can hardly imagine any response that would qualify as "overboard" in responding to Iran's behavior. But that's just me.

Last century, circa 1988, I was on the USS IOWA doing convoy escort through the Straights of Hormuz. Back when Iran ran around on Boghammer speed boats shooting RPGs into tankers and so forth. Occasional threat of a land-launched Silkworm missile, etc.

Our planned response to a significant event from Iran would have been flattening Bandar Abbas, then main port / sea base in the crook of the Straights.

Empty the 16” shell flats, launch the Tomahawks, then use 5” for SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) while the Midway performed an “alpha” strike (think, full air wing saying hello).

That might have gotten their attention…

Technically, the US gets very little oil from the Persian Gulf/Middle East. Europe and East Asia however do and instability in the Gulf means pricing instability in those regions. Which begs the questions, why aren't there more European and Far East military assets in the region? This is another example of other country's relying on Uncle Sam to protect their economies.

I’m reminded of a fellow I used to work with who said that our approach there was silly, a waste of US blood, time, and treasure, that the only correct approach was to “glass” the entire country of the next miscreant in the area, then ask if anybody else wanted some. I thought his approach was overkill or just hyperbole. Sometimes I wonder if he was completely wrong.

Iran is the world's George Floyd, and no matter what the reason or who is the "Police" when that response comes, the world will react with abhorrence.

I have a 41 year vendetta with the hateful Islamic terrorists, and hope I live to see the day the boot crushes their head.

Iran is showing their ass again because we have a weak leader in the White House. Jimmy Carter was a joke when it came to foreign policy. Iran seized American citizens and held them hostage until Ronald Reagan became President.

President Reagan was sworn in on the White House lawn,as he turned to enter the White House, the hostages were released by Iran before he could make it through the doors.

Iran knows enough to keep to keep the ever living shit getting kicked out of them.

Weak Presidents they will play.

I remember it well. I had tears in my eyes as this played out. My uncle barely made it out before the Americans were captured.

My understanding, from reading the Bible, is that that will not happen until the end of this earth age.

I found what you said riveting.

Which begs the question, what do we do? Simply sit the sidelines, talk, and allow things to continue to fester and escalate, or does someone do what needs to be done to resolve the root problem and then deal with and/or manage the outcome? The latter action requires great courage, so I doubt we'll have to worry about which option is pursued.

We will continue to kick the can down the road. "we" cannot see the truth, because we live in a world suffering many strong delusions.

Iran's collective mindset is driven by hatred of Israel, and until that is resolved, it will continue the coarse. Sir Newton said so.

The resolution will not be good, and if anyone believes Iran will stop when they achieve "parity", they are simply, deluded.

It is coming and it will be ugly.
