Is there any evidence Mattis actually said this?

We have a saying in the maritime industry.

A sailor without a knife is like a whore without a bed.

A couple of my engineers didn't have knives with them I noticed a couple of years ago. So for Christmas I bought each of them a Leatherman Crater. I expect all of my guys to have a knife on them at all times.

Got my first pocket knife as a gift from my aunt and uncle, when I was eight. That little Swiss Army knife has been with me now almost forty eight years !
