Your story is much more dramatic than mine. Through FB I met a lady in Ohio that shares the same last name. She and one of my daughters had been FB friends, she contacted me to see if we were possibly related.

Well, things seemed to point that way, when my dad was alive he told me we had cousins in a different Ohio city that he had met. Her family came from that city. All the "old" family members are long gone so we cannot make that link work.

But during my research I found her grandfather's death certificate. On it his birth location is listed, city and country. Same place my grandfather came from.

One of her cousins still lives in Michigan, we met last summer. Still working on finding a direct link, guess we could do a DNA test.

Cool. I found out from a out of the blue phone call a few years ago that I had two half sisters. I never met my biological father, talked on phone once, just long enough to say never call me again. His sister reached out to me, so I flew out met her and my two half sisters. It was strange and awkward, they kept trying to get me to meet my father even though he had left them too. The really screwed up thing was one was 6 months older than me, one six months younger. Guess my sperm donor was really busy spreading his seeds.

Flew home and never talked to them again. I was happy with my existing family, didn't need anymore.

Cool story Ryan!
I was adopted also.I'm 53. 3 years ago I found a half sister, my mothers daughter. About a year Later, I found my bio father, another half sister and brother. Bio mother passed before I had the opportunity to meet her.
It's been rewarding...although Mom was a hippie activist and Father was a rock and roll attorney. Apparently he defended her after her arrest at a sit in. (Ca. Bay Area, the sixties) Wink Let's just say they don't belong to the Sig Forum.

I was raised by a conservative farming family. It's been fun!

I too hope it goes well and you have a good reunion and build new healthy relationships.

My dad found out he had a 1/2 brother a few years ago and after a year or so of weekly phone calls, our family flew out to MI to meet them and our new cousins 6 months ago. He’s 6 years older to the week and we had a joint 81st & 75th birthday dinner. They don’t look much alike but same mannerisms and body language. Same opinions and ability to lecture but diametrically opposed politically. So that’s kooky, but otherwise their good people. All the few days we were out there my new uncle was introducing him as his kid brother. Overall it’s been a happy reunion and I’m glad they got to meet at least once.

Congratulations! I hope this fills any void you might have felt in your heart.

My sister and BIL are in the process of adopting three siblings from Hungary.

It's been a long process with ups and downs. I am confident that the adoption will go through this year.

They live with a grandmother currently. They have older siblings, but haven't been around them and aren't bonded with them. But at least they'll know they have other family out there rather than not knowing.

My sister and BIL have questioned how to keep the kids in contact with their grandmother. I'm sure that will be all worked out when they travel to pick them up.

Good luck!

Good for you!

My daughter keeps working on my ancestry (I'm adopted), so far not a lot of luck.

I don't really care much about it, but if something like what happened with you happens with me, I might feel differently.

shovelhead, I have a situation similar to yours. Via research on ancestry.com I have discovered a whole set of folks with the same last name as mine (same spelling, even) who lived in the same county with my forebears at the same time, but I cannot find any actual connection between the two clans. I think there just has to be a relationship but I've not been able to find it.

Same thing happened to me! A sister I knew nothing about. It was amazing to me and changed my perception of my parents entirely. Since I have no other living relatives, I could not seek any answers about how this all came about. As a cop, you learn that very few secrets are ever truly secret. Someone always talks. But in my case, the existence of my sister was never revealed. This fact alone made me really think about what I knew of my family history.
Good luck with your new family. It will be interesting.
