Apple’s real innovation was in going back to basics. The M1 is a nice part, but it’s not particularly revolutionary. It’s simply designed for its intended use. Instead of shoehorning in a mass-market processor that will be shared with all of its competitors, Apple created exactly what it wanted. The buses, the caches, the instruction mix, the coprocessors, the auxiliary hardware assists – they’re all designed with the end product in mind. As a result, the M1 is the right part in the right place. It’s efficient. The surrounding logic was designed for it, and vice versa. The operating system was designed for it, and vice versa.
