In a somewhat related note, if you don't mind me dropping this in here: A couple of weeks ago I had the garage door repair guy out for repairs. (big assed spring over the door broke, got 2 new ones). Told him while he was here that neither of my 2 remotes would close the door. They would open it just fine. Just not close it. I replaced the batteries, reset everything. Nothing fixed it. Guy comes out, look, and says AAHHHAAAAA! I see the problem. You have LED light bulbs in the opener (for overhead illumination when the opener cycles). Fortunately I have a stash of the old fashioned incandescent bulbs on hand. Handed him 2 100-watt incandescent bulbs, he put them in, and I'll be danged if that didn't fix it. I'm sure this won't fix your issue, but somebody else might be able to use that info. .

That's why, when I took the opener out of my Jeep (it's got built-in opener support), I put it in an Altoids box in the drawer ![]() "America is at that awkward stage. I have occasions when I'm carrying one of the remotes in my pants pocket and I'll get random openings or closings as a result. I don't do that very often. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

As a cop, I investigated burglaries where the scrotes would steal (or use their own) a garage door remote and slowly cruise my neighborhoods holding down the button on the remote. When they got a door to open, the garage was then entered and ransacked. Often they gained access to the house itself, since few people lock their doors from the garage to the house. Rolling code openers went a long way to putting a stop to this. When you consider securing your home, always include a good, hardened lock and frame on the door from your attached garage to the house. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

I bought one of those Kasa wifi plug things and plug my garage door into that. That way I can disable the opener with my phone when we go away. That might help you in the meantime.

Mine has too. It bothered me a great deal. I reset the opener controller, reprogrammed the allowed openers and changed the batteries in the remotes. I still do not feel all that comfortable and use the mechanical slide lock at night, and when we leave. _________________ This space left intentionally blank.

Had a weird issue with random opening garage doors, replaced control board, all the remotes, wall unit and outdoor unit. Long story short every time my neighbor across the street dad parked his rv there it would happen. Something in his c class caused the issue. He would leave and no more problems

One of the rental units we owned had an opener that opened by itself. The President of the condo association said it happened often with the 100 or so original openers in the complex. A new control board was the solution.

If your remote has more than one button that you can program, maybe try reprogramming them on a different button that is still "new".

I'm liking these plans a lot. YooperSig's mention of hardening the entry between the garage and the house is definitely something we should consider. I have some work to do. God bless America.

I have a chamberlain opener. Uses myQ. My doors are programed to close at 9pm. If the door has been closed, and you have opened it and stopped it, leaving the door open about 2”. I used to do this a lot, just leaving the door open a couple inches, good airflow, etc. At 9 pm when the door is supposed to close, since it’s barely open, the “close” programming actually opens the door. Doesn’t sound like this is your situation, but do you have MyQ and timers, or have it installed on wife’s phone and maybe she opened it by accident? The “lol” thread

![]() ![]() Get one of the rolling code openers and install a deadbolt. Years ago someone got into my garage and tried to get into the house as you can see in the one picture. This was before I had the dog. Luckily one of my neighbors drove by and saw my garage door open. He called me and I raced home. I didn't have my garage door open mysteriously at any time so whoever tried to get in just drove around during the day and saw what door would open. I'm out in the country a little bit on an old farm so my neighbors aren't that close to me. Maybe invest in a home alarm system also. I have one since I don't have the dog anymore. I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

3 1/2 inch deck screws in the lock plates and each hinge(into the wall, will stiffen a door a lot, but remember the badguy is in your garage and has access to your tools…and most new construction doesn’t have drywall on the inside garage door-it’s only insulation and drywall. The HBN Garage Door Control I have will remotely control the door and will nag (to your phone) at a programmable interval when your door is open.

As much as I love the home automation stuff, it still spooks me a little from a security standpoint. So no, the current openers are not on timers or apps or such. The remote was stashed in the sunglasses holder, and I wonder if it was pinched just short of making the circuit, sort of like in M'headSig's kitchen drawer example. Temperature change, vibration, random gremlins... something changed just enough to make the circuit and trigger it. Joatmonv: thank you for the pics. Deadbolts are on the project list for this week. I've changed the door locks recently, but will be adding deadbolts and very long screws for good measure. Long ago I locked myself out and had to kick in my front door. I was surprised at how easy that was. During the rebuild of the frame, I planted steel flat stock in the frame for the deadbolt to latch into. I think that side of the door is probably stronger than the hinge side now. Time to apply that fix to the other doors in the house. MikeinNC is right... once in a fella's garage, Mr Badguy has access to the tools. That stinks. OKCGene: thank you for the heads-up on LEDs. I do have a box of old-school heavy-duty incandescent bulbs, reserved solely for the garage openers. Petr: you could be right! After sitting still for 15 months... ![]() God bless America.

May be an urban myth but years ago there was a story about US Navy vessels using newly designed radios using certain secret freqs to send messages. Claim was that every time they used the radios, garage doors all along the West coast would open.
