Watching a lecture about learning. The realization the political power 18 to 20 year olds have is lost upon them.

Utah the smoking/tobacco age is 19, but the private-sale firearms age is 18. yes, federal law for handgun purchases from an FFL is still 21.

You used to be able to get a New York State handgun license at age 18, now it's 21.

California has raised the age limit to 21 for tobacco.

I took my 19 yr old Marine nephew to the range. Had to sign for him since he wasn't 21. The continued infantilization of our youth. 26 is the new 21. 21 was the old 18. 18 was the old 16, ........ Maybe I'm just old!

In Kentucky, you can buy tobacco at 18. Drinking age is 21. But, although you can't buy a handgun at 18, you can legally carry one openly.

I agree if you're old enough to be in the military but as you get older allot of this makes good sense. When I was 18 I thought I knew everything which I soon found out that wasn't true.
Believe me before you know it you'll be old.

Don't recall if you get a handgun but I think so - I know I bought a shotgun at 18.

I believe you can buy a handgun from a non-licensed dealer at 18 (not an FFL). I believe in NC an 18yo can posess and open carry a handgun. They just can't get their CCW permit until they are 21.

Not all kids apply here, but our 18 is now about 25 in maturity level.

They don't believe this to be true, but with the wisdom of years it is blatantly clear that the vast majority of 18 year olds nowadays aren't even close to being mature enough to do half the things we let them do.

It's an unforgivable absurdity, these disconnects, inexcusable in every conceivable way.

Once someone is old enough to sign on the dotted line and give their life for their country (pick any age where this occurs, it matters not whether it's 17 or 30), the rest ought to be handed over on a silver platter wrapped in a bow of $100 bills with an enormous smile.

Idiotic doesn't begin to describe the disconnect. Absurd barely scratches the surface. There is no unit of measure large enough to describe how pigheadedly wrong it is, or how Neanderthal-esque and immense the hypocrisy of it all is. Vile are those who did this.

I am with mixed emotions on this issue. I do believe that young adults today are less mature (in judgment, not physical development) than those of the same age were many years ago--the permissive Society in which they were raised is to blame for that. I also believe that military service is a positive factor in causing such young people to develop a more responsible attitude.

Whereas one can certainly argue that it is not fair that a young person can be drafted into the service and face possible injury and death and yet not be able to fully access all perquisites of adulthood (sometimes called "Majority"), there is adequate statistical support that a great many 18-year-olds (male, generally) still behave childishly and without due regard for the safety of themselves and others. In short, they have not yet taken on the mantle of responsible adults, even though they have reached one of the milestones on that journey.

I would be more open to permitting those 18 and older to have the full panoply of options due an adult if they were at the time actually serving in the military--that agency does provide adult supervision such that the most egregious acts of stupidity are avoided. (Yes, parents traditionally are supposed to provide that supervision, but we have all seen that this avenue has in many cases failed.)

I obviously don't subscribe to the view of 46and2 on this. Service in the military is obviously best done by those young enough to do it well (and who essentially think they are immortal), whereas most other activities of adults require persons with more maturity. I don't really see a way to reconcile the two.
