We are building in a development and the garages are smaller than I would like. I'm going to need to be creative with storage. What I do have going is a 10ft garage ceiling so I can put some racks on the top. He mower, snowblower..ect will be in a shed. I'd like to keep the kids bikes and power wheels in the garage. I want to have a decent size tool bench and workspace along the back wall. We plan to park our SUVs in the garage. I'm curious how other members made the most out of the space. Pics would be appreciated.

Hang the bikes if you can. We have ours hung and it saves a lot of space. Bikes seems to take up a lot of space. I also keep items in totes so I can stack the totes. They sell the bike hangars at Home Depot for maybe $10-12 each. Since ours are hung on the block, I used tapcons to secure the racks to the wall.

This was my garage the first time I lived in Houston. It had 2 single garage doors and a little storage nook built in by the right door. I could only park my Silverado in there, but my Dad retired in the Upper Midwest and decided he wanted to winter at my place.

Took a couple weekends, but both my Silverado (rt side) and his Bonneville (lt side) fit in there afterwards.

Rt Side:

Rt Side Nook:

Lt Side:

Lt Side Peg Board behind work bench:

Lt side hanging off overhead rack:

Lt Side wall:

Everything purchased at Lowe's and Home Depot. There are now more and better hanging shelves options than having two 45"x45" hanging on each side (e.g. Costco's deal on two 48" x 96" hanging shelves for $250 w/ 18 different hooks for hanging stuff from racks).

We're about to sign a contract to build a house. We're gonna add a single car garage to the attached 2 car garage. Can never have enough room.

And that single car garage will be completely full within a year. It doesn't really matter how much space you add, you'll always add enough stuff to fill it up.

That’s why you gotta fill those garages with cars and/or motorcycles. Smile

Not to brag but living in the country has benefits. I have both a 900 sq ft attached garage and a 900 detached garage. Both are full.

My daughter and her husband just completed a 2,000 sq ft garage to complement their 1,500 sq ft attached garage.

It’ll be full soon.

Cars are dirty but you get the idea. Very fortunate that I got to do the garage how I wanted so I wasn’t going to skimp. It’s 1400sq ft. I have 18 foot doors on both sides and the side with my Scat Pack I have a vaulted ceiling in case I do a lift in the future. I will then be able to walk under what’s on the lift.

And that is the awful truth.

Wife said if we had a bigger car for road trips, it would be more comfortable for all of us. I said we'd just end up bringing more shit. Big Grin

It's amazing how people will fill their garage with junk and park tens of thousands of dollars worth of car outside. Guy I work with, his wife has a Lexus CUV and he has a Tesla. Both cars are parked outside while kids toys and other junk is inside the garage. Makes perfect sense to protect junk while leaving something that provides transportation to work/school/family events gets exposed to the weather and theft.

My car is a 2003 Honda Civic with 191k miles on it and it still gets parked inside the garage.

Let the floor cure then paint or stain before using the garage.
Might consider plastic under concrete floor.

That's Florida, no basement, and nobody ever builds enough storage in the houses, not like up north where you can fill an attic or basement up with your "stuff"

Frankly I'd prefer to see a Tesla outside than a bunch of kids toys and junk, plus who wants to be subject to flying big wheels during a hurricane Razz

Back to the OP

Have the floor coated before you move in, the clean fresh surface makes it easier for the material to be bonded to the floor.

the world would be a better place if garage's had the same square footage as the homes . ( or larger)

1600 sq ft. home = 1600 s.ft. garage

As stated above, we in the Sunshine State don't usually have garages (unless you have way too much money, and have a car collection like someone I know). So every time I see these beautiful garages with actual space, order, tools, and toys - it physically hurts. Its a struggle to fit another safe somewhere inside to avoid the 100% humidity, let alone actually having room to work.

Great pics, enjoy your 1,500 sf garages. Please rub it in. You'll are soooo lucky, and the garages are so damn nice!

That was my garage immediately after finishing (ie as good as it ever looked), and it was my place the first time I lived in Houston. I’m on my second time living in Houston and now have a tandem garage (3 car garage that is 2 cars wide and one side is also 2 cars deep). My work bench is now in the deep part of the garage. I didn’t post pics because it isn’t photogenic and the organization applied to the first place seemed more like the OP’s situation.

Cabinets, cabinets, cabinets!!!
I built them high so that the car doors could be opened under them.
The ceilings are 9.5’ which helps.
I also built closets at the rear on each side to house lawn care equipment on the left, and car care on the right.
I’ll admit that I like a fairly clean garage and always wanted one that looked more like an interior room that someone installed a garage door into.
Maybe I’m a little weird.
