Five is right out.
Once the number three, being the third number, be reached,
then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.
Classic stuff!

Thanks. I was wrong about the M67 fragmentation. I don't think I imagined the notched wire, though, so it would be interesting to know where I got that.

Ah, a soothing verse from the Book of Armaments.

You may have been thinking of its predecessor, the M26.
It had an inner frag sleeve made up of stacked pre-scored metal rings. Not wire exactly, but thin strips designed to fragment into hundreds of tiny square shards of shrapnel.

That would explain what I thought I remembered.
Thanks.

Yes, but they’re thrown differently depending on the throwing hand. Right hand, fuse up. Left hand, fuse down. This always orients the “spoon” so it can be held while keeping the ring accessible for being pulled with the non-throwing hand.

SigmundThis has more info on blast vs fragmentation:
Why the Army’s new M111 grenade uses blast overpressure instead of fragmentationThe M111 Offensive Hand Grenade is meant to be more effective and reduce the risk of injuring friendly forces when used in confined spaces.

The Army has developed a new hand grenade that kills by using blast overpressure instead of fragments when it explodes, which Army officials say is more effective for fighting in close-quarter urban environments.
Blast overpressure is the rapid high wave of pressure that results from an explosion that violently compresses and decompresses human tissue. It can cause serious injuries to the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, brain, and other organs. It can also be fatal...

GustoferSo...I milder friendlier grenade? No. Grenades are there to kill those who are trying to kill you. It's simple really.

Again, it's not a new concept, just an upgrade over the existing concussion grenade the MK3. Offensive concussion grenades have been a thing in war for over a century. (The original MK3 dates back to 1918.)
And the existing frag grenade isn't going anywhere. Different tools for different situations.
Overpressure in an enclosed area will injure/kill just as shrapnel will. It's just safer than frags for the friendly forces who aren't inside that enclosed building/bunker they're assaulting, as outside the affected enclosed area it's less dangerous than shrapnel that may escape the enclosed area.

cth1974Yeah, HE or concussion grenades aren’t new, nor are they that obscure. The German potato masher was a HE grenade, and versions of it were used early in WWI. They also made collars that would go over the body of the grenade that were designed to fragment upon explosion, creating fragmentation, expanding its lethality in certain applications.
