This has become so overused, it's lost almost all meaning. It's true- this phrase has become all but completely meaningless, and it's time to stop using it in this forum.

If you want to create a thread about the death of someone, use a subject line which plainly states "(name) has died" or "(name) has passed away" or something to that effect. Or, perhaps, "John Smith: 1946 - 2022"

The same goes for responding to such threads. Rather than a page and a half of "RIP", members might comment on their relationship to the deceased- what their life's work meant to you, or how you enjoyed their films, etc.

It's perfectly fine to mourn passings, but we should put a bit of ourselves into our commentary, lest the announcements and the responses become automatic.

How about adding thoughts and prayers? Not so much here but in the media as a whole.

If it becomes overused here, I'll address it, but, yes, that phrase is even more devoid of meaning than "R.I.P."

I appreciate the suggestion that SF posts link a member's views, experiences, feelings to the event. We don't need a "news feed" telling us what is already known.

Brian's Song was a movie that affected me as a young man. I thought Mr. Caan did a great job as the terminally ill Brian Piccolo.

For a while now, I've been thinking about proposing one thread titled "Light a Candle" where we could add a new names instead of new thread every time.

If one's own freedom is unattainable, the freedom of others arouses envy and disgust.

POLITICS in an apolitical thread. Do you have any concept at all of how tired and unoriginal and BORING this shit is?????

No one thinks it's funny, no one wants to hear it.

I can understand how you missed it, though. It's only been policy for more than fifteen years and I've only mentioned it about six thousand times!!

I like this. Smile

You can tell the quality of most cheesecakes by the crust. This was just crusty enough.
