Columbia University got their Pee Pee Spanked

Well, well, well—look who suddenly cares about fighting antisemitism. Columbia University, after months of letting pro-Palestinian protesters run wild on campus, is now pledging to make combating antisemitism its “number one priority.” And what prompted this sudden change of heart?
Oh, just the small matter of losing $400 million in federal funding.
That’s right—Columbia’s leadership, led by interim president Katrina Armstrong, is scrambling after the Trump administration cut off a massive amount of federal grants and contracts due to the university’s “continued inaction” in the face of rampant harassment against Jewish students.
The Department of Justice, Department of Education, and other agencies made it clear: Columbia ignored warnings, failed to respond to a federal review, and is now paying the price. And this? This is only the first round of action. More funding cuts could be on the way.
Now, let’s not pretend this was some noble, introspective moment for Columbia’s leadership. Armstrong, in an email to students and faculty, admitted that the funding loss will impact “nearly every corner of the University”—research, student programs, faculty support, and even patient care. That’s what’s driving this sudden urgency—not moral clarity, but sheer financial panic.
But Armstrong did make one revealing admission. She acknowledged that Columbia’s disciplinary process “previously only existed on paper.” In other words, the university knew it had a problem, but for the past year, it let things spiral out of control—culminating in an environment where Jewish students were openly harassed and a student like Khymani James could declare “Zionists don’t deserve to live” and only then get banned from campus.
This isn’t some isolated incident, either. Columbia was the epicenter of pro-Palestinian protests that swept through more than 30 universities nationwide.
The chaos was so bad that the school had to cancel its main commencement ceremony—an unprecedented move for an Ivy League institution. And when things really got out of hand? Then-president Minouche Shafik had to call in the NYPD to break up an encampment and make arrests.
Of course, by that time, the damage was done—Shafik resigned just a few months later, and now Armstrong is left trying to clean up the mess.
So, where does Columbia go from here? Armstrong is now talking about “a unified Columbia” and “acknowledging past failures.” But the reality is that Columbia’s reputation is severely damaged. The university ignored antisemitism until it cost them something. That’s not leadership—that’s damage control.

parabellumYeah, when you're down to your last 16 billion dollars, money worries really kick in.

gearhoundsToo little too late. Let them be the head on a pike warning for every other institution that might engage in the same patently leftist behavior.

Are they losing $400M or is it paused until the beg, grovel and feign repentance?
I’d be happy if they lost it for good as punishment for their misdeeds.

egregoreCharging $50-90K a year (I'm guessing) for tuition, why do they need federal (i.e., taxpayer) funding?

400mI hope it’s a loss. Not a threat until they promise to behave. I agree let them be the head on the pike. They made their own bed.

downtownvWASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed Tuesday that ex-Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil is in the process of being deported for allegedly circulating “pro-Hamas propaganda flyers” — with President Trump saying later in the day that he watched “tapes” of Khalil’s anti-Israel activism and wanted to “get him the hell out of the country.”
Khalil was arrested Saturday by Department of Homeland Security officials — becoming the poster boy of a crackdown on alleged antisemitism by foreign citizens on college campuses, though it was not immediately clear why he was selected as the initial target.

sig2392Qatar has funneled 6 Billion to American universities. They are pro Hamas.
Some of it is illegal as they are required to report it, and reported just a fraction of it.

The money that’s being cut has nothing to do with undergraduate tuition. Rather, it’s money Columbia uses for research: medical, science, arts, etc. I qualified tuition because a lot of the research funding pays for graduate students doing the research as they work on their masters and/or doctorates.
Columbia’s largest source of funds, $1.8B, is from treating patients. Tuition, $1.5B, is next followed by government grants at $1.3B. It’s three largest expenditures were: instructional at $2.4B, patient care at $1.6B, and research at $951M.

I read that some lib judge has issued a ruling to stop his deportation. Hopefully that ruling can be overturned.

ElTorowhy is the fedgov giving tax money to any school, left right or center ? Hillsdale college seems to be doing ok with not a dime of federal cash. Most universities seemed to do fine for decades in the last 2 centuries with $0 tax dollars.
I have a better idea. If a university wants to do research then they can pitch the .gov and there will be .gov oversight for waste and abuse. And instead of a grant here’s your money have fun, the taxpayer will be an equity partner in the invention or any patents. And the .gov share of income goes to the new US sovereign wealth fund.
If west undershirt state U doesn’t like that they can get alumni to cough up or they can go to the private equity markets for the same deal. The fedgov will tolerate a lot more failed ideas than the venture capitalists will.
Just handing over money no strings attached to people needs to end.

AglifterA) Some merit in your position.
B) Funding gets “weird.” A LOT of it is corporate funded, so they can get a tax deduction for some of their R&D costs.
At A&M, LOTS of it is DoD, and that’s a whole other bag. Wildly wasteful and inefficient, but not exactly for profit.

TonydecIn addition to cutting federal funding to such schools, they should also cut federally funded student loans to those schools. If you want to go to Columbia with a loan you probably will never pay back, nope. Go on your own dime, not mine.

corsairColumbia Univ is sitting on a
$15b endowment...I've got zero sympathy for them or, their concerns.
March 12, 2025, 10:55 AM
nhtagmemberBottom line is that we made our statement and took the appropriate position.
Columbia knew what that position was. They sent their own way. Consequences to that.
And I agree. Call in every single federally funded student loan.

HRKWith a $15B endowment they should create their own Columbia Loan Program, fund the students they bring in. There is no reason the US government should be sending these universities grant money.
