The world is getting more creepy by the minute. Do you know where your cat is? Chances are, the Internet does. People:
IKnowWhereYourCatLives.com is a website masterminded and programmed by Professor Owen Mundy of Florida State University. According to THV11, Mundy says his goal is to warn people about posting pictures that give away their personal GPS coordinates.
“It worked great. It went viral immediately,” said Mundy of the site, which tracks over 7 million cats globally. It even finds them right inside their homes, just based on the hashtag “cats” and data, i.e. the aforementioned GPS coordinates attached to photos people post to social media. Mundy says these cat owners are unaware of how much they’re revealing about their private lives.
[...]
Mundy’s goal with the site is to influence people to protect their privacy, and he thinks that these cat photos are a way to help folks understand just how much information they’re unwittingly exposing about themselves. He notes that if the internet is currently in a “Wild West” stage of development, as it expands, companies may surreptitiously benefit financially from your personal data.

soflaacGood stuff.
Happy that our cat is camera shy. Rescued feral (was just a wee lass when I found her).

gearhoundsUnless you take appropriate steps to block location information (almost nobody does) it is frighteningly easy to gps backtrack. Any guns I show off to my internet buddies get taken at the station and no home pics show them or my cruiser.

lkdr1989So you're saying don't put a Fitbit on your cat and take a picture of it?

flashguyMy camera (a DSLR) does not have an integral GPS, and I don't have a smart phone. I do add GPS information to many of my photos by using a separate GPS logger and merging software, but I'm in control of which pictures get location data.

Fla. JimYepper these smart phones give the GPS location of the shot. New info for me but then I don't have a smart phone. Just discovered this the other day when perusing the file settings from a members pic. Showed the location which was on a road and with google you can go right there!

just1tymMy online photo host where I upload my photos for web use has an option to prevent any of this info from the photo. I've enabled it and disabled this option in the past for web display.
You can also disable the geotagging info on an iPhone also following these steps..
