What'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis? SF members bash the celebration of Memorial Day as a "holiday" all the time. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,,,, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe "If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living." -- Seneca the Younger, Roman Stoic philosopher

You, yes you, are incorrigible! "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

Was not even "a thing" in the US until Corona made it into a major marketing campaign strictly to sell more beer. It worked.

We usually go out for Mexican food on March 17th, and visit the Irish Pub on May 5th. Doesn't mean anything in the long run, but the wait for the tables is much shorter this way. I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

Get my pies outta the oven! |
We Americans did the same thing for Cinco de Mayo as we did for Saint Patrick's Day: took some low key or minor holiday in the host country and turned it into something completely different that everyone thinks is what the host country does, but doesn't in reality. In Ireland, Saint Patrick's Day was a religious holiday and not even a really big one and we turned it into a drinking fest with phony (I'm looking at you corned beef!) "Irish" food. Don't even get me started on the people that say "Happy St Patty's Day"
