What would you ask for at the hardware/lumber store to get a board that is fairly rough sawn and seems to be actual dimensions, not reduced. What I mean is a 1"x6" board actually measures 1"x6" and is rough to the touch, not smooth.

I have never seen it in a Lowe's or Home Depot. If I am calling other places, I would like to know what they would recognize as this type of lumber. It is often used for house trim.

typically you are not going to get full dimension lumber at a big box or even a lumber yard. A private person who sells lumber who has a portable saw mill or a local mill set up and advertised full dimension rough sawn lumber is how you will find it. Or take you own logs to someone who will mill them for you. Good luck.

Rough cut cedar??

Ask for "quarter-sized" rough sawn. In your case, you are looking for 4 qtr by 24 qtr.

There are a lot of mills in Michigan.

Closest I've come without going directly to a saw mill is known locally as #4 Boarding Board. Used to side outbuildings. Rough one side, 7/8" thick but a 1x6 still measures 5-1/2" wide.

Around here I go to a mill store that provides lumber for finish carpenters and cabinet makers. If I was looking for what you are asking about, I would be getting 5/4 F3S (5/4 rough sawn, finished 3 Sides) It would measure about 1-1/8" and show planer marks on the 3 finished sides, I would have to rip it down to just over 6" and finish the edges on a joiner to get 6" and a thickness sander to get 1".

Easily available where I live. Around here it’s called super board but I’m guessing not universal in any way. But just go to any decent not box store lumberyard and ask what you want, they will help you.

Easy to get here from one of our local mills. Basically unplained lumber.

Rough Cut.

I worked in the Lumber Industry 25 years ago when rough lumber was full dimension and maybe even a little bigger. 2x4 = 2" thick and 4" wide.

In the late 80's most of the mills retooled and adjusted rough lumber down to 1 3/4" thick by 3 3/4" wide.

Rough cut hemlock was used a lot for utility siding around here since there was a sawmill making it. Full dimension.

Of course just being "rough cut" is not the only factor.
Cedar while great for outdoor use is very soft.
I have been making some outdoor furniture and the "2x4"'s are very close to 2x4 and much larger than studs for example.
It is also rough cut which I like too.
Made a herb planter and now just built a stand/table for the Big Green Egg ~ and making the concrete top today.
