As many of you are aware I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes recently and today was the three month check of my A1C. When I left the hospital it was 11.7 and at the time I started with the provider that I'm using it was 10.1, imagine my surprise when the doctor informed me that as of today it is 5.7. (!!!) In my wildest hopes I didn't think it was going to be down that far, the doctor told me that she has never had a patient make such a large improvement in such a short amount of time. They have taken me off the insulin injections, I am strictly taking 500mg of metformin twice a day, which was also a pleasant turn of events that they didn't need to increase the dosage of the metformin. I am to monitor any changes, although it also means that I don't have to do glucose checks four times a day as I had been. Depending on what happens I'll either be able to stay at the current med levels or they may have to increase the dosage, only time will tell. To say that this makes me happy would be an understatement, I feel pretty blessed at the moment and I sent a thank you up to heaven for my good fortune with my health. Just felt the need to share. Thanks. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

Good work! I take Metformin, Glypizide, Januvia, and an injection of Lantus at night in my battle to keep my glucose levels in check. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

Nope, the doctor looked over the blood glucose log I’ve been keeping and says I should be good to go. Depending on how I feel on waking up I might need to do a check, however I have been waking up feeling fine for some time now, so she believes it’ll be alright, she doesn’t even think I need to have a snack just before bedtime, as I have been doing, to ensure that my glucose stays good while I’m sleeping. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

Congratulations. Did you lose a lot of weight? "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Great! It's much easier to maintain a healthy body weight without insulin. Don't be too quick to dump the metformin, there's strong evidence to indicate it prevents certain types of cancer. Minimal doses may be good for you long term.

The heaviest I’ve ever been in my life was a few years ago, when I weighed 205. When I was released from the hospital I weighed 175 and it stayed there until very (I mean within the last couple of weeks) recently. When they weighed me yesterday I was down about five pounds. I’ve always been a skinny ass white boy, however I think I’d like those five pounds back. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

I didn’t know that fact about metformin, that’s interesting. I’m going to do as the doctor suggests, she’s the one with the medical degree, after all. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

And, thanks to everyone else for the attaboys. It was sort of odd going to bed last night without having to shoot up, however I woke up this morning feeling just as good as if I had done an insulin injection. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

Clubleaf - would you mind going over what you did and what changes you made to make such a difference? I'm borderline and am very interested in what you did and how you made it work.

Clean livin’, brother, clean livin’. Seriously, I was able to do this by working the program. By that I mean diet and exercise. I eat much more healthy than I ever did, more salads, fiber and protein (the doctor said to me once “Protein is your friend.”) I can have pork, chicken, turkey and even lean beef. I get these frozen sirloin patties that have 26 grams of protein each. I can even still have the occasional sugary treat, so long as it’s included as part of my daily intake. For example after dinner last night I treated myself to a small bag of m&ms, the type that you might give out Halloween. I used to be a big Pepsi drinker, I didn’t care for the taste of Diet Pepsi, but I don’t mind Diet Dr.Pepper. I can have all the bacon I want, so I have that going for me. I’d say talk to your doctor or speak to a dietician and see what they suggest. ___________________________________________________________________________ "....imitate the action of the Tiger."

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
My doctor prescribed metformin for me when I was first diagnosed with diabetes. Turns out I am alergic to it. I am on glypizide now, 3 10mg pills 2X a day. Watch my diet, lots of vegetables, lean meat (wife trims ALL the fat off, stay away from the carbs. I have been kind of looking into that new glucose test meter, that requires no "finger perforations", but don't know, yet, if my insurance covers it. Which reminds me that I have to check with the doc's office on Monday. To the OP, great news!! Happy for you! If you are taking Statins stop taking them for a while & check if your blood sugar goes down. When I stopped taking Simvastatin my A1C dropped. __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! Sigs Owned - A Bunch
