I'm home from the pacemaker install this morning. Went to the hospital at 0600 (O-dark-thirty for me) and surgery started around 0700. Was finished about 0900. Released at 1100 and a friend picked me up and brought me home. I'm told I will have some pain (have a prescription for pain killers if I need them). Supposed to take antibiotics for several days (prescription for those, too). Restricted from driving for 24 hours (so don't know how I'll get prescriptions filled today--both Uber and Lyft seem to rely on having a smart phone, which I don't). I can probably handle waiting on the pain pills, but probably need to start the antibiotics today. Bummer!

Had my second one installed a year and ahalf ago no problems except found out I was sensitive to Latex, nasty rash.

When I had mine put in a couple months ago, they said take Tylenol for the pain...lol...After the first couple days, the worst was trying to sleep as they don't want you to raise your arm over your head. I solved this by wearing a tee shirt without putting my arm through / trapping my arm next to my body.

Got mine 2 years ago at the VA in LR. No pain. Have a checkup by computer to VA in Washington. No problems so far. Have to go to Hospital one week after computer checkup. APN in hospital hooks me up and does recheck. Good people. The only problem so far is a leaky valve in one chamber but not severe yet. APN tells me no major surgery she can repair thru a vein.

Yes, Oz--this was planned. I scheduled it to occur after all my handbell activities had been ended for the summer, so the restriction on lifting weight wouldn't interfere (I ring BIG handbells).

I'll just wait the 24 hours and drive myself to the drugstore, I guess. I'll need to buy cat treats tomorrow and go to Choir Practice, too. Thanks, all, for the good wishes.

What did the doc say about the battery life years for your pacemaker?

I have a pacemaker, no big thing. All will be well.
I think mine is made by Boston Scientific.

I have owned stock in them long before I got this.

He said 7 to 10 years, depending on how hard it has to work. It's supposed to keep my heart rate at or above 60.

The instructions I was given say that microwaves and cell phones don't interfere with modern pacemakers, but strong magnets and EMF can. Prior to the insertion I was told that there is a very large vein in the left shoulder (Doc said was as big as my thumb) where several come together and that gets opened up and wires run through the vein to the heart. When my Step-Father got his several years ago, it took some calibrating. After about 6 weeks, he was good to go. he just turned 92.
