Credit card fraud,identity theft etc. Law enforcemnt catches common criminals but it seems nothing is done with John Q.Public when his card is compromised. Is it the fault of banks,or a lack of enforcement? Is it because the fraud originates in Nigeria or India? I would welcome comments.

How do you suggest catching criminals operating from shitholes like Nigeria, Russia, India, Pakistan, etc…? It’s much easier for financial institutions to pass the cost to the consumers.

I totally agree something should be done along with targeting the phone scammers. Seal Team Six seems appropiate but many operarate from European protectorates such as Jamaica

For some reason, law enforcement isn't interested in the common fraud. My father's checking account was compromised. The perp requested a large (to we normal people) check sent to a particular person at a particular address in California. The perp's voice was recorded by the financial institution, and it is most definitely not my father's voice. Somehow the perp had the correct answers to the secret questions (your first pet's name, etc).

Neither the NY nor California authorities had any interest whatsoever in following up. This would have been an easy case to solve, and likely would have discovered many other victims of these people.

The institution said "not our problem, whoever was on the phone had the correct answers".

The home countries where this originates does not care. If you watch some of the YT channels where they catch the scammers from India, the LE there has no desire to do anything, even when they get handed all the info they need.

The U.S. should put some pressure on countries like India to crack down on the scammers. Whatever they can do economically to force them to act. By the time I get in my late 70’s and into my 80’s AI will probably be som good that I may be scammed by then. It catches plenty of old people now. My towns weekly crime blotter usually has at least one person per week getting scammed.

Institutions could easily offer a short class on how to spot this activity.
The latest I am getting are text messages that read "Lets get together for lunch it has been awhile." with no name attached. I am not sure where this leads but I am not taking the bait.

I do not remember. There was a thread on scamming and a link to a scammer call center.

Perhaps the US Government should consider shutting off telecommunications access to the US to bad actor nations. No enforcement that shuts down these criminal actors, no access to US telecommunications networks.

All nations have bad actors, including the US. That is to say narrowing it down for access control would be tough. Not to mention use of VPN along with cloud services makes it even tougher.

Shutting down the internet would essentially mean no access in or out. So that would be fairly detrimental comparatively.

And call centers are not operating the same as the folks using exploits to gain access to systems or steal information.

The Feds and all the 3 letter agencies should be all over this. I'm talking NSA, CIA, FBI; the whole lot of them; then get the hard pipe hitters to make them pay (Literally and figuratively).


Insane that the politicians aren't all on board with this. Who would oppose this? Seems like an easy win for either side of the isle to back this up. I recon only reason they are not all over this like a rabid dog is the financial big dogs don't want to rock the boat...
