My wife and I just got back from our first Lifelong Learning Seminar at Hillsdale College in Michigan. Most of you know of Hillsdale, either through their speech newsletter Imprimis, or perhaps from having heard Hillsdale President Larry Arnn on the radio. Hillsdale is a small nondenominational Christian college that takes no Federal or state money in any form, proselytizes not religion but Constitutional government, with its online courses on the Constitution and other important matters of public policy. The seminar we attended was a week-long one on Islam and the West, taught by three professors: a theologian, a historian, and a politics professor. The course covered theological issues related to Islam; the history of Islam’s centuries-long conflict with the West up to the present; and the geopolitical issues related to Islamic states and Western stats and empires. Those familiar with Bernard Lewis’ book of the same name (Islam and the West) would find much familiar material and a similar outlook. Participants were mostly our age or older, i.e. retired, and many of whom had fascinating life histories. Conservatives, particularly but not necessarily Christian conservatives, immediately felt very comfortable with this group. We share many laughs and much of our own reading and life experiences. Compared to, say, a cruise with like-minded people, this has several advantages: 1. It’s much cheaper: $1100/person for a couple for 6 days and nights of excellent meals and lodging, outstanding lectures and discussions, and plenty of free time. 2. Given the cost, people who don’t want to plunk down twice the money or more for a cruise can attend, so it’s a wider spectrum of conservative seniors. 3. Fewer distractions such as one usually has on a cruise. Range report: one afternoon we spent a couple of hours at Hillsdale’s shooting sports education facility, getting low-key instruction in clay shooting. I did better than I expected, and would really like to have similar instruction over a course of a week. Hillsdale offers course for women (Ladies for Liberty) Hillsdale Lifelong Learning Seminars and couples (Couples for Liberty) that include basic instruction in gun safety, handgun, rifle, and shotgun shooting. Clearly Hillsdale is a strong pro-2A institution. While this particular course will not be offered next year, many others will be. Yea. Great little place. Know some people who work for the college. Drive by the shooting range several times a week. Know people who shoot there. | |||
