I am trying to find some records of my deceased sister-in-law who passed away this past May of cancer. She served in the first Iraq War and was in the Air Force for I believe 8-10 years. Long story short, her immediate family is shall we say shattered. She lost her civilian job at Hill AFB several years back due to heavy drinking and everything spiraled out of control and down the tubes after that. Last time anyone saw her before she entered Hospice care, she had sold nearly everything she owned and have no idea where any of her records ended up because we were kept out of the loop. She has two grown daughters 19 and 22, the younger one lived with her and we have no idea where she is at or lives and the other is married and lives in Utah.

I have her full name, DOB, DOD, and SSN, but on the forms for the military records is requires a Service Number too. How do I obtain the SN? Who do I need to go through or what is the process?

Thanks in advance!

Try submitting it with that field blank, or use the Social Security Number. All service personnel after the 1970's used the SSN as id numbers, and existing separate service numbers were phased out.

I shall respect you until you open your mouth, from that point on, you must earn it yourself.

^^^ This. Use the social security number.

DoD switched over to a new "DoD ID Number" ILO the SSN, but probably after she left the service.

What they said. "Service numbers" stopped years ago. For years your "NSN" has been your social security number.

Good luck.

From 1974 to beginning in 2011, Social Security Numbers (SSN) were the individual’s Service Number. Starting in 2001, in an effort to prevent identity theft, only the last 4 numbers of the SSN were seen on official documents (orders, training records, pay stubs, etc).

Beginning in early 2011, individual Service Numbers were re-issued, especially on Military ID Cards. My retired ID was re-issued to me in 2012 with a unique number, not my SSN. How the numbers are created, I do not have a clue.

In the CG, we used our SSN when I enlisted in 1988 up to 2002 2003 ish, they call them EMPLID (employee id) after that due to identity theft..

There was a time when all .mil people had serial numbers....my dad had one for the CG in late 60s....

Submit the form with the SSN, they can search it that way

Yeah, sort of like the original service numbers.
(I still remember my RA number, but not the new one. Perhaps I should learn it, but I don’t expect to be in formation again and told to recite it.)
