Gunfire caused panic at a vigil for slain rapper Lil Lonnie on Thursday evening.

People had gathered to release balloons in remembrance of the Lil Lonnie, who's given name is Lonnie Taylor. A video shows someone speaking when the crowd starts to react to shots being fired.

There have not been any confirmed reports of injuries.

Taylor was shot multiple times as he drove his SUV down Montibello Drive on Sunday night. His vehicle stopped when it crashed into a house. A female passenger was not injured.

There is no suspect information at this time.

In response to the vigil shooting, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba gave an interview with WAPT to reassure residents that "this is a safe city and it will remain a safe city." Lumumba expressed his regret and concern for the families who attended the vigil.

"But those individuals who are intent on being knuckleheads at this moment, we want them to know that this is not a safe place for that behavior. We won't tolerate it," Lumumba said.

Anyone with knowledge of this crime is asked to call the Jackson Police Dept. at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477). Send a text to 847411 and enter "JPD," followed by your tip information, then press "send." You may also submit a tip online by clicking on the web tip link on the Central MS Crime Stoppers website.

People are so skiddish these days. They were just giving the traditional "Fotay Gat" salute.

I agree. And if we only had laws against guns, these things wouldn't happen. Wink

I like that the mayor referred to the celebratory shooters as "knuckleheads".

That's some funny shit.

The Mayor has probably also had other statements of denial like "ignore the man behind the curtain . . . these aren't the droids you are looking for". Roll Eyes

Back to my broken record, if you continue to deny reality, you will neve solve the problem.
