If he provides his own rescue boat to follow him, let him go.

Give him a compass, a pat on the butt, a firm handshake, and a fond farewell.

What an asshole. He was granted asylum to the US, from Iran.

He does appear to suffer from mental illness. Grandiose ideas, threats of self harm…

At this point, offer to take him to international Waters. Get him a compass, and go.

It is kind of an interesting question. The libertarian in me says the government should absolutely eff off out of the man’s life and let him make his own decisions.

A more extreme example might be a guy on top of a mountain in shorts and a T-shirt who “knows he can fly” and wants to jump off and do it. To everyone else, his death is the obvious result. Should the government (or anyone else) get in his way?

I’m not sure I have a hard and fast answer. In general though, I am always going to lean toward less government. Much less government.

He has made multiple attempts to do this. Sooner or later, one of the attempts will kill him.
Let the moron go ahead and get it over with.

If he thinks he’s hamster-balling across the ocean with no significant source of food, and more importantly water, he really is off his nut. It takes a full week to sail from NY to England which gives you the ability to deal with wind, currents, waves, etc. without supplies, he’d not last long-

Having read a few books about failed solo attempts at sail it, and folks ending up in life rafts in general, I say have at. Let us know if you make it, otherwise we don't want to hear from you attention whore.

He will get lost in the Bermuda Triangle and we'll hear nothing more of him.

Why take him there? Just let him walk the 14 miles it takes to get there. With a good offshore breeze, it won’t even take that long.

Some people, including those not otherwise stupid or ill, seem to have a fate with unfortunate destinies. I don't understand the psychology, but I also don't think everyone who does is otherwise crazy. But this guy I think is a little crazy, and the best thing for himself and everyone else is probably to let him go and die on the open sea. The only caveat is he may not take any PLB technology with him, otherwise he may not achieve his personal and much desired date with destiny. He would rather die doing his hamster imitation than deal with real life, so why continue rescuing him from himself after so many iterations. Pull up one last time, if he says no thanks, turn off the radio and go home to supper. Everyone should be happier with that situation. Years ago I would not say this, but the older I get the more freedom I think I perceive in letting individuals make their own decisions for themselves, including stuff like this.

When I was in the CG we called what he was attempting a “manifestly unsafe journey”, and forced people to return to port or we took possession of the vessel and took them into custody to be returned to the nearest safe harbor.

We used to go out in the shittiest weather and save idiots from themselves when we should have let them thin themselves out of the gene pool. But that was above my pay grade.

I had a customer, an older German-American guy. I tried to make his place the last stop on my route; if I got to him around his closing time, he would always break out some beer.

One day, he was no longer there. His daughter was running the business. I found out from other sources, what had happened.

He had a little "activity" in the hot tub with his girl friend, then lit a cigar, and asked her for a whiskey, which he enjoyed, and then keeled over. Gone.

He died doing what he loved.

The article said that this dude ran across the entire United States twice, successfully? I still don't think that he can successfully hamster-wheel across the Atlantic, but if anybody is going to give it a try he seems like the guy for the job! Lindburgh would never have made his solo flight if we stopped everybody from doing everything that is "manifestly unsafe." Let the dude try.

I say let him go for it and then bill him for his eventual rescue.
