We drilled a deep well a couple of years ago and have excellent water tested very pure and mostly mineral free. Installed a 22kw generator mostly for back-up due to storms and are working on our food supply. To answer the original question...we could make it six months now but I just cleared about an acre for a chicken house, some Kinder goats and a larger garden.

Of course we are about 15 miles from a major city and would expect the hordes to come pouring out of the city after all the food was taken.

Our prep is for a Coronal Mass Ejection that would have the same or worse result than an EMP event but the CME's happen all the time, one has not been aimed at Earth like the Carrington Event at the turn of the century or the latest one in Canada several years ago.

Which freeze dryer did you get and do you like the size?

The only reason I can see for having a pool in Nevada is to have a supply of water, in an emergency.
I'm just not willing to sacrifice that much yard to get it.

I live in hurricane land. 500 out of 550 homes in my neighborhood flooded during Hurricane Harvey 18 months ago. We were lucky and live on what passes for a hill around here. We have a 23kW generator for the house and keep food for 150 days. I have 30 days worth in the frig and freezer, 30 days worth in the pantry, and 90 days worth in the man cave/music room. Long term food is cases of MREs, 50 lbs rice, 50 lbs dry beans, 50 lbs flour, 50 lbs sugar, etc...

Its not unrealistic based on personal experience during Hurricane’s Ike and Harvey for power to be down to up to 14 days and for it to take 5-7 days for any resupply to hit the stores. If you’re 9 meals from anarchy here, you better get ready for the apocalypse. Since 2005 we have had 4 major storms in the area that knocked power down for 4-14 days. In the 4th largest city’s metro area, you can’t wait until the last second and expect to find anything.

We got the medium size Harvest Right. It keeps up with us just fine. Harvest time keeps it running 24/7. The way we have it set up in the laundry room required us to get the medium size. The large one would have made getting into the pantry a side shuffle.

I may have to work on the neighbors. We live in the city but our street is pretty tight. I could see a small group of us cooperating and making each other pretty comfortable. As well as making looters pretty Uncomfortable (looking at some of you others in this thread lol).

I'm near Durango HS. Are we neighbors?

Vinny-

Not quite (I am E and S of you) but closer than the rest of the forum, I'm sure.

If someone blows the Hoover Dam I will invite you to the Utah bug out house. Wink

Bruce, I'll extend the same invitation to you in the event you can't go through town to get to Utah. I was fortunate enough to get a decent BOL which only requires me driving SW away from town, an hour away. Wink

I find your posts are usually what I'd say...if I were funnier. lol classic.

As for me, I can make it two months easy. After that, if shit isn't fixed, we've got a bigger problem. I figure I'm better equipped to make it than most. I can hunt and have the equipment to do it. Also like OZ, I live next to the Great Lakes with boats and fishing pools.

When I lived in CA, I had several 55 gal blue drums filled with water and preserver, plus smaller containers. In TX, I do not have the space in my garage. I have a pair of 7.5 gal containers, plus our usual supply of bottled water from Costco. But I have a couple of water filtration kits since we have more than several bodies of water in our community. In fact, this thread is a reminder for me to get a Berkey filtration system, something I have been putting off for a year. We have a pool also.

Yeah, I have been prepping a bit and since it's just me and my dog it's not difficult. I started after reading about the hurricanes and living in an earthquake zone figured that a couple of weeks would be worth prepping for. I decided I never wanted to stand in a government aid line if I could avoid it. I store about 150 gallons of water just incase. I'm good on ammo, guns, thermal, night vision, generator, solar lights, batteries, and the other fun stuff that we guys love to play with. I have enough freeze dried food to last a year or so and keep adding a little here and there.

This is not a statement but a question. Are you advocating taking(iow, stealing) from others, "by force if necessary" rather than preparing now while you have the time and resources?

I'm guessing that the post was made in jest. More than a few store owners are armed and organized such as the Korean merchants during the Rodney King riots in Los Angelas.

You could say that I am very well prepared. I don't like to publish a whole lot on the web (not sure who is all reading it)

I’m not as prepared as I’d like to be. I have some MREs and emergency water in my truck.

At home, I have some Mountain House #10 cans set aside and some canned goods.

I’m concerned about my water supply. I have a few Sparkletts 5 gallon water jugs that I swap out yearly. I have a Katadyn ceramic water filter and a few ideas where I could get water.

Due to my dependence on Thyroid medicine, I’d be in a world of hurt within a few weeks of a SHTF anyway, so I’m not in it for the long haul.

For disinfecting water, get some granular calcium hypochlorite (HTH). You can use it to make a bleach solution to disinfect water. Stores way longer than bleach. 10 years if stored in an air tight container, i.e. Nalgene bottle. I think 1 lb of HTH will treat 10,000 gallons of water.

https://www.epa.gov/sites/prod...g_water_sept2017.pdf

I also have 3 bathtub liners. If something bad were to happen I would fill the liners in my bathtubs. We are on a "community water" system. The water system has a 125,000 gallon water tank. I'd have enough time to fill my liners.

That's a good point, deepocean. Being able to process water is as valuable as storing clean water. We bought some ceramic filters but I have not set up the receptacles yet. I should do that soon. Another thing to consider is what to do with human waste. We have the components of an organic waste disposal but I don't know if what we have is enough when our boys start arriving with their families...

A good reminder to have a few months of any critical meds on hand.

Revisiting this thread has got me thinking:

Any suggestions for best places to buy bulk mason jars?
Also, a wood-fired smoker that works but won't break the bank?
