at her home in Portland Oregon.

One of the most beloved and admired writers of her genre from the later middle of the 20th century, her writings combined wizards and warlocks, racial equality, minority ethnicism and brilliant inventiveness - often in just one book.

She was my favorite author, bar none, and reading her future history of what may or may not have been California is a treat that I can repeat at least once a year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I too enjoyed many of her works over the years. The Left Hand of Darkness was my introduction to her. Great stuff!

Sad. Lathe of Heaven was my favorite, followed by the Wizard of Earthsea series

A Wizard of Earthsea was one of my favorite series growing up. IIRC, there was a horrible mini-series or made for TV movie that really butchered the series. If you saw the movie/series, forget it and read the books. They are much better!

It was from the Sci-Fi Channel, so it had little chance of being decent quality.

Studio Ghibli's anime version is better, but still differs from the books.

Ursula was reportedly disappointed with both adaptations, but especially so with the Sci-Fi Channel version.

I remember seeing an old (1980) TV movie version of "Lathe of Heaven" produced by PBS I think that was pretty good and held fairly closely to the book.

Sad to hear this. Her reputation is without question. However, I've tried to read a couple of her works, and could never get into them.

I think I'll have to try again.
