Has any body bought one of these Apple computers from Amazon? They are not renewed by Apple, but are supposedly renewed by Apple certified companies. Amazon warrantees them for 90 days. I am interested in this one.

I bought my refurbed laptop from Apple I forget how many years ago. It's been great! I'll do it again when the time comes. At that time I talked to a sales guy who used to work in the factory and said that refurbs were always paid more attention to than new off the assembly line. That was good enough for me.

I think it's worth it. I have that exact genre of MBP from mid-2014, only mine is 13".

I replaced the battery myself last year and the screen was replaced by Apple (this era of retina displays had some screen delamination issues and they replaced a lot of them for free).

I would just check that the screen looks brand new when you get it or maybe ask about that specifically before buying.

I had the opportunity to give mine on to the wife and buy a new one for myself, but I passed and let her get a new one instead since mine is still doing great 5.5 years later.

Another great thing is these MBPs still have numerous connection ports (USB, SD Card, HDMI, etc) instead of the current crop that only have USB-C and require adaptors for everything else.

I have purchased many refurbished Apple Macs over the years. Every single one of them has been stellar, without any problems. I currently have two refurb MacBooks running as I type.

Were they refurbed by someone other than Apple?

I would not hesitate for one second, to buy anything that has been refurbished by Apple.

"Renewed," on the other hand, by an "Apple certified" company, I would proceed with caution.

Apple re-furbs have the same warranty as new retail Apple products, and Apple will stand behind them, 100%.

Third-party renewals? 90 day warranty, and who knows what you might have to go through if you do have a problem.

My current Macbook Pro is working flawlessly, it was an Apple refurbished, 2 years old at the time I bought it, and now 4 years later, I have not one regret.

No idea what Amazon refreshed is, but that 90 day warranty would scare me.

Some of them, yes. My most recent refurb Mac came from Amazon.

I also recently bought an older (~2013) MacBook from Operator Headgap Systems, a husband-and-wife operation that have been Mac technicians for decades. After emailing the owner back and forth, I bought the machine from him, and it's been problem-free.

That's an important question... My wife got a piece of crap MacBook that was refurbed by Amazon. Hard drive went south 6 months after purchase. The link provided is refurbed by Amazon.

No, it says it is renewed by TekZilla, and fulfilled by Amazon.

This. I buy between 2 and 6 refurb MBP units from Apple every month. They go out to our new hire engineers and we've almost never needed to have them fixed before they're due to be renewed again after about 3 years.

EXCEPT - The 2016 models have some kind of video cable ribbon that's apparently too short. Apple repairs these at no cost to us though. Overnight to Apple, then Overnight back to us.

I cannot speak to the non-Apple refurbished units, other than we bought one once and it came with a non-functioning keyboard. We sent it back via Amazon's fantastic return policy, and then stayed with Apple's re-certified store from there on out.

I just refurbed a 2011 MBP, myself, and it works great. The older products are amazing.

This right here.

Bought my wife an iPhone refurb from Apple a couple years ago. Phone took a poop within a few months. Their tech at the store tried to repair it but couldn't so they gave her another one right there on the spot.

I bought my 7 through the Apple refurb program last year and will buy my wife's next iPhone through the program as well.

That single experience with their warranty sold me on their program. Also, an extended warranty can be bought through Apple as well.

I would only buy refurb from Apple.

They will do a true refurb and give you a much better warranty.

These resellers “refurb” might be a cleaning and a factory reset and that’s it.

I see where it is sold by TekZilla so you're right and they probably refurbed it. The questions that probably cannot be answered were all parts (if any) replaced with Apple OEM stuff? Were all parts tested to meet the original Apple specs? Was the refurb done by Apple certified techs? I'm not saying this is going to be a lemon but be aware that this machine is "probably" less than an Apple refurbed product though you may never notice it.

Tempting I know, but if my info lockup is correct that is a USED, possibly 5 year old (mid 2014 first issue date for that model) laptop with only a 90 day warrantee. If buying used is the only option for you at this time it might be worth it vs a private sale from a stranger. Don't know...

Hard Pass for me.

Apple refurb? I’ve bought a ton of them - computers, iPhones, iPads, etc - with not a single problem, ever.

Other company refurbs? Nope.
