For those of you with high humidity in your basement. Does your central HVAC have vents and returns in the basement?

One caution I would give about shopping for these is to note where the intake and exhaust ports are located on the new models.

I bought that model last year myself. I'm pleased with it other than the odd design idea of putting the air intake on the back of the unit with the exhaust on the side. This prevents it from being used against or near a wall, but I bought it anyway due to its features and reputation.

I recently received my 1 year warranty expiration notice with the offer of extending the warranty. Rounding, 1 extra year of coverage is $22, 2 years costs $40, with three years costing $54. The unit cost $220, so if buy the extended 3 year warranty, that would come out to $69 / year for a functional 70 pint dehumidifier for 4 years, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

I was puzzled about that intake/discharge arrangement myself but my wife did the research and it really did have the best reviews. So far it does a great job.

In my case we have a basement where the AC unit there is about 20+ years old (some tell me this is considered old...). (I have a mean time failure mindset for things like this).
On aircraft, by all means do the annual and keep her tip top, but volunteer to spend 5k+ on a new AC when it works? I'll wait...

Our AC system never did handle high humidity well. We have so much ductwork I think it had to be a union by the foot job.

In my case, in our current house, two finished rooms in the basement have vents. In FL your real estate tax is partially based upon your "conditioned" floor space, so I would pay more RE tax if I added the entire basement to the AC load.

I don't think adding the basement to the load would be economic anyway because the basement tends to stay relatively cool. All other things being equal, a basement cooler than the rest of the house will have higher RH if there is any air exchange.
