How secure are the trifolds? Are you comfortable going into a shopping mall with long guns in the back? Are there more secure options?

No, I'm not, and that's why I got a one piece hard tonneau for my truck.

Black92LXOnly folding one I would be comfortable with is the Diamondback for things like that.
I have a trifold that I like very much but I know it is by no means overly secure. I don’t keep much of value in the bed.
If I need to go in for a long period of time it goes in the cab.
I use a kryptonite cable to secure the bikes to the tie downs if I need to go inside.

CopefreeThey’re decently secure but could be opened very quickly with a crow bar or something of the like.
Regardless, I really like mine.

gpbst3Your taking about maybe a half inch thick piece of plastic securing the cover. A crowbar would make quick work.
If you set on keeping guns back there I would get one of the small metal job boxes from home depot and using a cable lock to secure it to the bed tie downs.

2000Z-71Not very. I've got a BAKflip MX2 on my truck. With a coat hanger you can wedge it in and release the latch cable.

ChuckFinleyBlack is right. I have a diamondback and love it. No one is getting through that without a lot of effort and drawing attention.

SIG228I have a Bakflip MX4 on my Tundra. I'd leave guns in the bed long enough to run into a convenience store, etc., but wouldn't leave them overnight. Out of sight, out of mind, but as has been said, it wouldn't take too long for someone with a pry bar to get into it.

PatriotI have an Undercover ultra cover.
It has clips to latch it at two-thirds or rails that allow you to raise it so can use 100% of the bed.

Oz_ShadowThe security is in no one knowing what is under them. In a public, visible space, odds are against someone opening every hard cover on a truck. In a dark, private setting, very minimal security if someone is looking to steal.

mark60For guns I'd use nothing less than a Diamondback, I'm still trying to talk myself into spending the money on one. I was going to get a trifold until I saw a video demonstrating a piece of wire being used between the tailgate and cover to reach in and pull the cable to pop it open.

casYou have to ask the question of who you're trying to keep out. They're good for people walking by and crimes of opportunity. Past that they offer almost no security. All these type things come with wafer locks and can be opened amazingly fast. You don't need to be a master locksmith or professional thief, Youtube has pulled the curtain back on the shocking reality of such things.

doublesharpI love my Bakflip but it would be easy to break in. My Ridgeline has an under bed trunk that is secure but the Bakflip just keeps things out of sight - enough to keep an honest man honest.

I second this. Most locks are easily bypassed or picked and the wafer locks on most covers are the same type of lock that people put on thermostats. Not going to be very effective… I would strongly encourage you to consider one of the drawer types that mounts to the truck and is blocked by the tailgate before I looked at a cover alone.

Mr.9mmToyota’s tri-fold could be defeated by a pocket knife or box knife. They are foam board painted black. I never left long guns in mine unless the cases were secured by a cable and lock to the tie downs in the bed.

jigray3Even my fibergalass tonneau is only as secure as the lock, which appears pretty flimsy.

HK AgI had a Bakflip on my F1fitty and loved it. Now if you are comfortable with the out of site out of mind principle then yeah good to go.
However of course if you load your bed while in the parking lot then said principle no longer applies.
They are designed to keep the honest people honest, a crook with time and skilz will get through any bed cover / camper made today.
The best security to add to a folding bed cover is the sliding drawer systems that create a new bed floor with slide out drawers. That creates another time consuming and noise generating obstacle for them to defeat.
