Anyone purchase and/or install one recently?

Looking to put one in a 2014 Nissan Rogue.

Last time I purchased one it came with installation and after seeing what was involved (lots of cutting and splicing in under the dash) was fine leaving it to the pros. Just wondering if it's gotten better as I see some come with harnesses.

I had one in my Audi and it was used to spoof the system to unlock the car so it could be broken into and have my stuff stolen

I'd be careful

Check with the Nissan dealer and see if it is an available add on. If it is, it's just a matter of new remotes and programming, done a few of them fairly cheap.

I've only used Python alarms for remote start so I'm biased towards them.
I LOVE that the alarm that pages you via remote that something is going on with your vehicle and can remote start from 1/4 mile away.
For me it means I can get the AC going from the 18th fairway and have a nice cool truck to get into. You'll probably use it to warm up. Smile

Pricey but I will buy another when I get a new vehicle.
In your neck of the woods ABC Warehouse sells them. (per the Python website)

Aftermarket are strewn with problems, mostly because the install is done with splices that leave more options for failure. Try to get it done through the dealer. If not the dealer make sure the installer does a quality job.

My car (2016 Honda Accord) came with one from the factory. It's a nice-to-have feature that I rarely use.

Unlike the Python system mentioned by KMitch200, I do have to say that I am underwhelmed by the range mine has. I'd say it's +/- 50 feet. The few times I tried using it was while leaving the office on really cold days. But, by the time I was close enough to initiate the remote start, I was almost to the car. Roll Eyes

Agree. My Hyundai came with a “BlueLink” option that enables me to control the car from my phone: start the car; sound the horn; set the cabin temp, etc. It also notifies emergency services after a crash, and gives me a voice link to them. After three years I’ll have to pay an annual fee if I want to continue the service.

Generally not a DIY job. A lot of car audio installers don't even do alarms and remote starts. Big question is what kind of range do you want, and do you want a confirming remote, ie. it tells you if the car is locked/started. As opposed to a one way remote like a typical key fob, where you press the button and you hope it is locked, started, etc.

If you just want it for your driveway or right outside your office, then you may be able to do one that uses your factory key fob, for example by hitting "lock" three times. If you want longer/unlimited range, then you'll need a different system, and I'd recommend something with a smartphone app, as that really trumps even the longest range transmitters.

Let me know if you have a traditional key or proximity key/push to start, and I can find out what's available for your vehicle. I can tell you what's a fair price to do it, and probably find someone near you that could do it.

I've been in the 12 volt business a long time, and I can assure you that a good reputable shop will do as good or better work than the dealership. If the dealership has a truly plug and play option that could be a different story, but I doubt that's the case. I certainly wouldn't be afraid to use a reputable aftermarket shop.

Just looking for a bare bones, similar to factory starter. Wife just wants to be able to start the car in the driveway.

My brother has an audio store, mostly online now. He explains in on his web site not to attempt this installation unless it is done by a professional. My son was an installer and did mine. I would not attempt it myself.

Check out Crutchfield to see if they have one for your car. They're usually plug and play.

I do most of my car audio/tech research there.

In '08 the Subaru dealership installed one in a brand new Impreza we were buying. The 'dealer-installed' options are money-makers. The kid did it in 15 minutes and there has always been a wire dangling. The tape they use comes apart in the 150˚ heat of a closed automobile under the Arizona sun. I'm convinced the dealership's install was no better than DYI, at 3x the cost.

My truck has factory-installed remote starter; although climate control does not come on, it is nice in the winter to get the block warmed up.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. There are a few companies that make remote starts that will work with the factory key fob, and they do have "t-harnesses", which sound like "plug and play", but usually involve more. We would charge $480 for that remote start, including installation labor.

My recommendation would be to find a JL Audio dealer, as JL is still picky about who sells their product. Generally that will be a good dealer. I found this company:

State Of The Art
1047 E Michigan Ave
Ypsilanti, MI, 48198
(734) 484-0400
sales@stateoftheartcaraudio.com

I don't know anyone there personally, but that's where I would start if I were you.

My 2014 Ram 1500 has a Compustar installed by the dealer. I get a range of about 1000 feet unobstructed.
