Ok, I think I'm going to use the Rotozip. I'm afraid the stroke of a jigsaw will hit the metal fixture nailed to the wood. Now to find the right bit.

You're on the right track, no way would I use a jig saw for this task.

Rotozip (which I don't own), or a palm router set to the correct depth of cut (which I do own).

r0gueDid it today. It was as bad as we imagined, and then some. But the rotary dremel tool (Craftsman generic) worked well. Thanks all!
