The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Considering he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing, he probably has no clue... correction: I'm certain he has no clue.

While I agree with the overall idea, it strikes me as a little ridiculous to have a soldier critiquing the recipients of a civilian honor.

Then I would suggest that you don't understand the original intent of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

quote:
It recognizes those people who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".[2] The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform. It is often considered to be the American equivalent of a knighthood.

I’m with you. Why attribute words to a marine which he most likely never considered. There’s no comparison between the awards. And for fuck’s sake, Obama’s not going to have another opportunity to hand out the award anymore. Oh, you want to point out yet another thing that Obama cheapened and degraded in his presidency? Tell me something new.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Okay on that point yeah, I agree. I do hate when images of people are used to express an opinion if the people pictured are not the ones who actually said the quote. If you cannot attribute the quote to the person pictured in the meme then it is disgraceful to use their image.

Are you aware of any times it has been awarded to military personnel for military actions/service/etc? I'll admit I don't know a lot about its history. The blurb in the OP seemed to run counter to a military honor, and the military generally has other ways of honoring merit.

It has been awarded to members off the military 24 times.

It was not originally intended only for members of the military but I also don't think that it was intended for people like Ellen DeGeneres.

The medal has only the significance that the President elected by the people bestows upon it.

It is sad and offensive inappropriate to attribute text in memes that suggests a wounded soldier expressed those views.

Joe Biden and Bill Cosby also received the medal from Obama.

The real tragedy is that we had enough people in the U.S. that agreed with Barry and voted him in office twice.

The meme is in poor taste with the comparison.

Edited to add:
Do we know who this soldier is?
Would he be prone to using the F word?
Is he now a Pastor or someone running for office where this is an image he would not want to project?

Maybe offensive is too harsh, but it clearly is inappropriate to use someone's likeness in the manner shown.

This is not even related to current news, can we not just let Obama fade into the dust bin of history.

I'm not quite sure why you think the meme implies that the wound soldier is expressing any view. I took it to show what an ass hat Obama was and what any normal person viewing the pics would think. Offensive? Nope.

I agree with this interpretation. It's denigrating to the Marine.

Obama was an awful president. That goes without saying.

If you take a moment to look at the list of recipients, you'll see it's historically given to people from a number of different career fields, for their work in those fields. Plenty of actors and musicians received awards from Republican presidents, including Reagan.

OK. Please set aside all the crap about a Marine being used with a quotation. You are focusing on a side issue.

I am looking at Obama awarding the medals to those people, and I am saying are you fucking kidding me?

Jeez...lighten up Francis. It's just a meme.

I agree with the sentiment of the meme and don't feel it denigrates the marine at all.
