Anyone have experience with the new EDOF contact lenses that are now out? Login/Join

I currently have a toric lens for my right eye and a standard lens for my left eye set up for close and far seeing respectively. The new EDOF, assuming I am reading correctly, are supposed to do both. Supposed being the operative difference so I thought I would turn to the collective wisdom of the forum to see if anyone has experience, pro or con with them.

Thanks in advance!!!

I'm not into the need for multifocal, yet, but sure it can't be far off, especially with how high my prescription is.

Looks like most of the EDOF [from a quick search] are 1-day lenses.
I'm currently in dailies, and planning to go back to monthly at my next exam. Primarily from a cost perspective. The dailies are a noticeable increase in cost.

I know we have a few eye pros here, hopefully they chime in.

These sound like they are permanently installed during cataract surgery. Not daily use contact lenses. Is there a daily use version available? Something like discussed here: https://sigforum.com/eve/forum...935/m/6290061815/p/1

No, they are daily use lens. Supposedly, they allow you to focus close in and far away depending on how/where you are looking.

I would like to have an interocular lens but that is a little too $$$$ for my budget (taking donations LOL).

It's not surprising there is some confusion, Google tells me they were just released in the last few months. As such, there may be limited experience with them but it's worth a shot to the forum so to speak.

ICL is about [to my knowledge] my only shot at 'permanent' corrected vision.
Was told I'm not a LASIK candidate last time I got an evaluation for it.

$4-6k was the estimate I got at the time.

Was that per eye or total? If total, I'll probably sell both my P7s. It would be worth it to me to be able to see without my glasses.

Total, IIRC.
ICL, was similar in cost to LASIK, at the time.
Similar procedure time as well, I believe.

You’re probably thinking of the “Deseyne” contact lens. I don’t believe it’s been released in the states yet…at least I haven’t been contacted about it, and I don’t have access to it yet.

It’s like an “improved” multifocal contact lens. At least from the literature I’ve read; it also is designed to help with the tears and tear film by releasing tear components…but that may just be marketing.

From my understanding, it is a daily disposable, and no toric option…yet.

Price is not known…but it probably won’t be cheap!

BB61 -

If you’re happy with monovision, there maybe isn’t any real reason to change anything. Having said that, I had good luck with the Biofinity multi focal - that was my “go to” lens if we wanted to go that direction. You could try a pair and see if that helps you in your world.

Everything has there pros & cons … Good luck.

I wore Biofinity single vision for years, no complaints, as a consumer.

The Biofinity line of lenses are great lensess, and I use their line *a lot.*

Having said that, when one factors in the cost of solutions (that you don't need with dailies) the gap in cost does narrow.

If you're happy with dailies, I would suggest staying with them-they really are so much better for the ocular surface, in that it is a fresh lens every day, and the lack of buildup of biofilm (even with good compliance with monthlies) augurs long-term success.

IMNSHO!

Thanks BC, I don't mind the dailies, I forget what brand they are, not Biofinity.

Well, everything just flipped upside down. The optometrist just told me I have a cataract in each eye. Appointment with the surgeon next.

Well, you can get bifocal toric IOLs, so your problem is solved. Smile

I had a bifocal toric IOL installed in my left eye last Friday week, and expect another to be installed in my right eye next Friday. I expect that I’ll seldom need reading glasses.

The cost for both: $6,500 plus meds (eye drops).

Serious about crackers.

Perfect - now you have some options to ponder …

1. Set both for distance and use reading glasses
2. Set both for near and wear glasses for distance
3. Monovision
4. Multifocal

I might as well go multifical. I’ll have to see what the surgeon says.
