Once upon a time, roughly 30 years ago. I can't believe I even typed that..

The year was 1987. I took a friend of mine (Skippy), an amazing guitar player to pick up a Jackson Charvel Model 4A. It was an amazing guitar and he could weave magic with it. Flash forward to 1995 when a mutual friend got married. Of course Skippy was there, and since I was now playing, I asked if he still had the Charvel. If he ever thought of selling it, I wanted dibs. He told me I better find my own he'd never sell.

Around 2007 I began looking myself figuring he'd never sell. Casually trolling guitar stores, pawn shops, etc. A few years ago one of our small group from H.S. passed away. I saw Skippy at the funeral and of course as that guitar was part of our group lore, I asked. He had sold it to a member of his church (he turned J.W.). I was pissed.

So the search was on. I looked high, I looked low, I trolled around as before. I figured that one day, I'd stumble upon a small shop and there it would be. Or so I told myself.

.... and it happened!

I was on a business trip a week ago in Jackson, MS. We stopped at a little restaurant called Pig & Pint for lunch. There was a guitar shop down the street called Fondren so we took a walk to kill a little time. I was actually looking for a cigar box guitar. The had a few but way too nice for what I was looking for, so I opted for a real bottle neck slide instead. I looked back for my co worker and there it was, hanging on the wall....

"shit" (actually said that)

The guy asked if I wanted to see it

"shit"

Of course I did... it was amazing. Just like I remember Skippy's. It didn't take too much thinking given the price. Definitely a bit lower than a typical model 4 goes for these days in good condition. Given the lack of a hard shell case I elected to have them ship it to me. They threw in a gig back and set of new strings.

As I sat at the airport chatting with Skippy via facebook I realized something. His Model 4 has a bolt on neck. This is a neck through. It's a Model 6, most likely a 1989. Of course the initial search made be get light headed as the going price for a Model 6 is over double what I paid for this one. I've been going nuts ever since waiting.

Today she arrived... so without further delay let me introduce my new sweetheart. Jackson Charvel Model 6 in cobalt blue.

I know jack squat about guitars other than driving a friend a hour to a store for him to pick up a high end Martin acoustic guitar back in the late '60s. He still has it.

I remember his excitement and can only imagine your joy at finding your grail. Congrats and enjoy!

That's awesome. I sold the guitar my dad bought me some 15 years ago to a guy in Gulfport, MS. I watch craigslist pretty regularly in hopes of eventually getting that one back.

The thing that started me down this path was an old Silvertone Hofner knock off bass guitar that a friend gave me. The neck was badly warped from being in a basement strung for years. I was able to get it playable and that is what I started with.

Around 1990 I bought a decent Yamaha and set the Silvertone aside. In 1996 a friend wanted to learn bass but was left handed so I strung it upside down and let him borrow it to see if he could make a go of it before bought his own. That summer I started a new job and left town. I came back over the holidays and learned that he had passed away mostly from being very diabetic and an alcoholic. I asked his girlfriend about the bass and she told me that he'd traded it for a six pack of beer and she was afraid to tell me. Rightly so, the alcohol never would have had the chance to do him in if I'd found out.

I still troll guitar and pawn shops back home looking for it. I still have the pick guard.

Ok ya.... that's not gonna happen. Not for a LONG time.

I have been playing it. The high E didn't survive the shipping. Fortunately it broke right at the tuning peg. Since it has a locking nut I was able to use a needle nose pliers to pull the string into 'close to tune', lock the nut down, and use the tremolo knobs to bring it into final tune. It only has to last until Saturday when the new strings go on. It plays nice
