I've got a metal jerry can full of gasoline that is about a year old. Stored in an unheated/cooled garage.

I see online that I can take it to my county's landfill for appropriate disposal, but it has to be in a container...I'm not giving them my jerry can.

Let's say I use it in my lawnmower, or my vehicle, mixed at some ratio with fresh gas. Is that viable? What ratio?

Any other ideas? Do parts places take the stuff?

I just pour old gas into the car after a recent fillup; not necessarily all at once. I have even done this with 2 cycle mix.

Pour it down the storm drain, like God intended.

How big a jerry can? You have kids, I'm going to guess that you buy milk in gallon jugs. The empties are "containers," aren't they?

Put it on Craigs List. Just kidding. How many gallons? I would not risk putting it in my equipment if it has not had fuel stabilzer.

I'd mix it with fresh and run it through my law mower. If it has no water in it, 2/3 fresh, 1/3 old shouldn't cause you any problems.

The biggest problem with old gasoline is that in small amounts like those that accumulate in the jets and carb float area, it turns to a varnish like substance when it evaporates, the alcohol portion attracts water which can cause rust, and the alcohol also damages rubber, gaskets and seals. In larger, sealed quantities, if it hasn't visibly deteriorated to the point where it has globs of varnish in it, you should be able to run it through just fine.

By way of example, I had a truck that I parked for two years with about 1/4 tank of gas in it as it had a dead starter. When the starter was changed out and the battery charged, it fired right up. I filled the tank, thus diluting the old gas, and ran it through without a problem.

Just use it in the mower, or jeep it'll be diluted enough for no harm to be done.

You could also pour it in aclear jug, see if there's water in it before you put it in the jeep

Are you not supposed dump it out a gallon at a time over a large concrete area and let it evaporate?

It's 5 gallons.

If it smells like gas, looks like gas, doesn't have water in it just use it in something. I'd pick something without a cat as my first choice and probably mix it with some fresh stuff just for risk reduction. But its not going to bother anything.

I've poured old gas as you have into a car that had at least a half tank without issue. Fill your car up 3/4 and pour half in. Do the same next time you fill-up.

Seriously? I never would've considered this an issue. Just dump it in your car's gas tank and be on your way. Just be sure your tank is at least half full. Anyway, that's what I would do.

I wouldn't worry too much about one year old gas.
I did have to clean out a garage w/ some old cans and just took them to my county recycle center that had a hazmat section.
Now that I think about it, my regular weekly garbage pick-up wouldn't take an EMPTY broken nozzled 2 gal. gas tank. I took that to the county also.

Mix a gallon or 2 in with the rest of the gas in your car or use it in a mower or whatever. Throwing it away can cause great contamination to the ground water.

Yes. Gasohol (gas mixed with ethanol) is not good for your small engines. I wouldn't use it in the lawnmower, blower, or chain saw. They have tiny jets in the carbs which easily become clogged.
But... mixed in with a full tank in the car it won't hurt anything.

Same here. 1 gal to 40 is 2.5 percent mix. Won't harm in my opinion.

Or, you could just pour it all in the squad car and take it to maintenance to cure the knocking!
