Just had an offer accepted on 25 acres in Mt Vernon. How is the area? Most of my Rural KY experience is over near Hopkinsville way and meth abounded. Still have to wait for the VA part of the home inspection before we know if we get it for sure but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

KY resident a long time ago, it's south central KY on the edge of the mountains, Not quite Raylan Givens country, not is it Art's Lexington Blue Grass.

South of Berea, and the College of Berea, County Seat is Mt Vernon, I-75 splits the county so it's easy travel North to Lexington, or South to Knoxville.

Berea is a neat foot of the mountains small Houses Berea College, lots of arts, good food, hard working students, everyone has to prove they can't afford to go but academically can make the cut. At least that is the way it was... Weaving throw rugs, blankets etc top of the line made stuff, The the old Churchill Weavers factory...

http://thechurchillco.com/

There's only 17,000 people living in the whole county, 98.81% are white... median income $24K
per house, $30K per family, 20% of the county lives in poverty....

You'll like this.

Rockcastle county has only voted for a Democratic candidate for president during Civil War Reconstruction in 1868, 1872, 1876, and 1880. In all other elections since 1824, it has voted for the Republican, American, Constitutional Union, Whig Party, or National Republican candidate.

Gonna be a nice quiet place to live, close to cities, Lake Linville aka Renfro Valley, not far from Somerset and Lake Cumberland, the houseboat capital of KY...

It's a great area...

Yup.
You are pretty much half way between my house and my Cabin.
Growing up the Mt. Vernon exit off 75 was our lunch stop at Druther’s. We lived another 2 hours north back then. Sadly Druthers is not there anymore and they really built up the highway down south so we head further south to exit 75 now.

It’s fairly rural but London, Corbin, Berea, and Lexington are all close enough for anything you’ll need.

You’re best gun shop option is Classic Arms & Archery in Lexington.

Will you be working somewhere??

I'm from Somerset and went to college in Williamsburg, it was Cumberland College back then. I love that part of the country. Always intended to fish Cedar Creek Lake in Stanford but haven't yet. Much for an outdoor lover to do but drugs are a problem. Always have been in eastern Ky. Your money will go a long way. I've got a buddy who sets up at gunshows in Corbin and he says he does well. Cumberland Falls are way cool and the Kentucky State Parks were famous for their Fri/Sat night lodge buffets but I imagine wuflu has changed that. Got a real shitass for a governor in Queen Andy Beshear and you can thank the Louisville/Lexington school teachers for that. Rest of state went red but voter fraud went unchallenged because McConnell hates/fears Trump. I've still got a lot of kin in Somerset and get down there once or twice a year (eat at Guthrie's Grill on hwy 27) but right now I'm thankful to live about 500 yds from the Ky border in s Indiana, a solid republican state. I used to be proud of Louisville but it has turned into a real shithole in the last 15-20 years. Has a very weak lib mayor who let the rioters loot and pillage the city. I live about 5 miles from the heart of the riots but there is the Ohio River between us and out of my nearest 20 neighbors there are 6 cops and 3 firemen. Hope things work out well in your closing. Smile

Loved the area.
Renfro Valley was one of my clients.
You will enjoy your time there, I’m sure.

Wife and I are still both active duty here in Alaska. She will be getting out of the Army right after we close on a house, and I may stay in another year up here. After that she’s getting her nursing degree finished and I’ll be looking into Gov service jobs in Lexington. Drive will suck but worth it for the area I think. I have a pretty broad but thorough skillset so I have no worries about finding something while I finish my FEMA degree.

We have 2 horses (and one of those pregnant now) at Ft Bragg to move over that way as soon as she gets down there, and I cant wait to have board off our bill list, not to mention childcare for our two sons under 2.

The meth is there as well. Pills and heroin supplement that. Eastern KY has its share of problems just like Hopkinsville.

It’s not as violent as Hop-town, but you get the picture.

Hopefully I’m far enough out in the boonies to limit my contact with them. If wife goes down before me, she’ll have to hurry up and get her KY drivers license so I can ship her CCW pistol to her. She will be driving down with a shotgun at minimum anyways.

Why not send the pistol with her???
We are a permit less carry state no need for a KY OL to carry concealed here.

Because she will be driving through Canada to get there and her pistol isn’t legal to take through there. She still has a TN CCW and with as much traveling as we do, she wants to maintain one for reciprocity in other states.

Tell her to apply with both the VA and FMC Lexington as a nurse, FCI Manchester as well. Nursing in the Bureau is a very good job with law enforcement retirement. VA is good, too, but you have to work longer. USAJobs.com has a portal, I believe. Apply right away, the waiting list is sometimes long. University of KY is offering recruitment bonuses, I think, and St Joe was recently offering relocation offsets with a two year contract.

Good luck, and welcome!

Will do, I've been scouring USAjobs for a few weeks. Lot of USAF support and Forest Service jobs open now, but hopefully I can find something in 6-9 months when I need it. She has to finish some schooling when she gets there, so hopefully she can get on with one of those in a few years
