Kind of depends. I have their big US General rolling tool chests. Have had it for nearly 10 years. The thing is a beast blows Craftsman’s rolling chest’s quality out of the water. The steel is much thicker and the ball bearing sliders are still like butter. There are a lot of shade tree mechanics out there who have never spent $100 on a wrench. I'd hazard to say cheap tools have performed the lions share of work in home garages and barns since Uglat decided his sandstone rock would bash that bunny's head in just as well as Grog's obsidian masterpiece. As a matter of fact, I'm sure there are plenty of professional mechanics out there who keep some cheap stuff around too. I don't imagine anyone out there wants to grab a $50 precision ground flathead to pry the lid off a can of killz. A buddy who is as close to OCD in his tools as anyone I've met, settled on the ~$1000 HF version of a smaller lathe for his precision rifle hobby. I was astonished when he showed it to me, as I had always considered "those products" as being bottom of the barrel. His response was "I didn't need a $4000 lifetime lathe for what I had in mind". Now over 20 years later he's turned out numerous small projects that augmented his hobby very well. The elCheapO HF lathe still functions as new and he smiles with each little job. Yes I too first think of mounds of HF junque, yet there does seem to be some gems that more than meet the price-point years later. Well, my little brother had a long career tearing down and rebuilding Caterpillar equipment of all kinds. He probably has well north of $50k in tools at this point. He said after doing it a while, he started buying harbor freight tools. If he then used it enough to break it he would pony up for the good stuff, but quite a few of their tools held up fine saving him a ton of money. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. I bought an air die grinder/cut off tool there, way back in 1990. I used the heck out of it at work. I generally bought really good tools, but decided to go cheap here,$19. That darn thing still is going strong. Most of my Klein hand tools got stolen after I retired and my poll barn got broken into, but I still have that and use it a lot. Here's a vise I bought back ~1998. The big chunk of cast iron broke off around the 3rd time I used it. Notice the pipe jaws under the bottom? No? That's because they both fell out after a short while as well.  I had a 4 1/2" grinder than lasted a year or so, as well as a cut off wheel that took a crap while cutting some steel tubing. I also have a pry bar with a bent tip. My Craftsman pry bars never did that. I had a dead blow hammer that completely fell apart and spilled the steel shot all over my workbench. Put me in the CCC camp as well. | |||

The 3/8” variable speed drill I bought 2 of for $18 each compare very favorably with the HD/Lowes offerings at either side of $100. As little as I use them around the house/ham shack, these are real bargains. I have small air compressor that is very satisfactory as well. The drill press is certainly not machine shop quality, but it is useful for some of what I do, and at far less cost. If I were running a shop using them all the time, it might be different. There are items that I will, and do buy from HF, and there are others I chose not to. Their cheap tarps will not last one summer in Az.....they dissolve!! On the other hand, I purchased a 40volt battery operated leaf blower 4-5 months ago. I use that thing almost everyday, and so far, so good!! | |||

If you need a cheap tool, that you'll probably only use once HF is the way to go. Otherwise if you want something that will last and work well, buy quality.
