If you just want to repair it,
1 - White glue and 2" wide gauze strip.
2 - a 3 or 4" wide strip of brown craft paper/brown paper bag
Apply glue 1" on either side and lay gauze strip up it,(you will need to put a wood block against the spine to hold it)

Apply more glue far enough on either side again and lay the strip of paper over the gauze and book cover and facing page.

Lay a piece of wax paper over the blank leaf and close the cover.

Lay a weight on the cover and allow it to dry.

I used to print school books in Tallahassee Florida.
And worked for a publisher in Marietta a while too.

I've used a HP Scanjet 4600 scanner for doing this (on a book with a lot fewer pages). The scanner head is clear glass and detaches from the bed, allowing the scan edge to get very close to the spine of the book. It's an obsolete scanner with no OE drivers for anything Win 7 or newer, but VueScan software supports it and you can find it used. Just a thought if you don't feel like opening up the book.

There is also book binders tape which is like box tape but thicker.
I used to use it to fix holes in RC model airplane wings.

Thank you.
Not only do I like collections of photos (and other illustrations), but I am especially interested in military history, and the Mexican War is one I could learn much more about. I’ll have to give it serious thought.
