Typically police will look at a the perpetrators hands to ensure they are not holding something “armed”.

In this instance the police needed to look at the perpetrators hands to ensure that he was not holding something “deadman’s switch”.

Life is getting complicated.
Danger can exist both with and without something in the perpetrators hands.
Had he been holding a deadman’s switch many others could have been killed and injured when he was shot.

Explosives are cheap, readily available, and easy to make. Once this happens a few times, the call for the authorities to "do something" will be so great that our way of life as we know it will be forever altered. It will affect the First, Second, Fourth and probably Fifth Amendment by the time they get done with it.

The amount of panic that fake vests will provide at that point will leave a horrific impact on free society. It'll be gun control on steroids. Society as we know it will end for a security state. We as a society are not willing to take up an Israeli model to attempt to stop this. England has more experience than we do in it, and they killed the guy without trying to bring in EOD. Now, they can't interrogate him. While I'll take this as a happy ending, "Lone Wolf" isn't always as isolated as what you'd think. The guy probably had some usable intel.

I'm frankly surprised that it hasn't happened yet. Explosives are a much greater fear of mine than active shooters will ever be. Local Law Enforcement just isn't trained to handle this and the societal turmoil it will cause will mark generations to come. For whatever reason, active shooters are more than willing to die, but they just haven't figured out the explosives end of it yet.

I wasn't there and am just guessing but the fake vest served it's purpose.

As this is the USA, if terrorists start using suicide vests, it would drive many states to make it easier to obtain a carry permit so they can ventilate some of the terrorists. However, New Yorkistan, New Jersistan, and Kalifornia would likely double down on stupidity.
