Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
Well, got my new flag and pole in today, was about to mount it on what I thought was painted wood, but promptly realized that the trim is also Hardieplank. A quick search didn’t really give me any clear solution. Do I just need to drill and then use 3 inch screws into the stud behind? And then caulk around it? Is there a screw material I need to avoid? It’s a 6 foot pole with a mounting bracket. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones

I had to Google Hardieplank to figure out what it was. This link may be of help: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeI...unt_into_hardiplank/

That material cracks easily, follow whatever recommendations given above.

I read the Reddit link above but wanted to see if anyone here had any more pointed advice. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Our previous home was covered entirely of that material. I know nails crack it if the head is penetrated to far. We had minor buckling but that could have been due to the contractor cut the material to tight and caulked the joints. I would locate where the studs are based on where the nail heads are located. Pre-drill through the product, then use wood screws into the OSB/studs. Don't over tighten or the screws and flag mount are likely to crack the material.

So that’s what I just finished doing, but I missed the stud with one screw. Drats. Got two of three in the stud, so not perfect but it’ll hold until I work out a solution. A lot of high density homes in AZ don't shear the exterior walls with OSB except at the corners. As long as hit OSB you should be fine unless it's a huge flag/pole and high winds.

I'd drill holes in the Hardie Plank bigger than the screws you intend use to mount the flag pole holder. I'd fill the holes with caulk and screw the flag pole holder into the sheathing under the Hardie Plank. Hardie Plank shrinks and if you don't leave room for that, it will crack. We have two houses on Lake Huron in northern Michigan with it and have first hand experience with the shrinking and cracking.
