Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best![]() |
I've accumulated a large toolbox of stuff over time. Off the top of my head: Patches, various sizes. Scissors for cutting patches Q tips Silicon cloth Rags Oil Solvent (I like hoppes 9) JB Bore paste Brake cleaner Lubriplate grease Silicone oil Dot 5 brake fluid for supressor baffles Isopropyl alcohol for lens cleaning Nylon brush Brass brush Steel "carding" brush Brass Bore Brushes Steel chamber brushes (great for getting lead out of revolver cylinders) Tornado brushes Lewis Lead remover AR chamber brushes Dental picks Bore jags Brass cleaning rods for pistol and rifle Blue Loctite (in case you need to remove screws to clean under something) Screwdriver kit with assortment of flat-ground bits Air compressor with blow gun (I use this all the time, but you have to be careful to not blow parts off the gun and I also wouldn't use one in the house!)

I second that. Stuff works when others don’t.

I was told to use only the non-chlorinated type for cleaning firearms. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

I agree with having a set of gunsmith/firearm related screwdriver bits. Very handy for not destroying grip screws/parts.

All the break cleaner stuff I’ve seen in the stores is non-chlorinated. But you are right, stay away from that. Alot of great suggestions here. A pull through bore snake (Otis or Hoppes) A lead away cloth (for the front a revolver cylinder) A chamber brush can be useful too. A good nylon brush will do alot of work for you. If you go ultrasonic, check through some of the threads. There are considerations on what to use as the cleaning liquid and also on how much lubrication is need afterwards.

No ethanol! |
I like to use rods and jag, with a brushing after barrel has soaked a bit. If i venture to the range, I'll often have more than 2 to clean so to make things easy I recommend 2 rods, so I can leave jag on one, and brush on the other. Also, a cheapie bottle of alcohol to rinse the crud off brush and jag, and store till next time. ------------------ The plural of anecdote is not data. -Frank Kotsonis
