Arizona Department of Child Safety workers fired for wearing ‘professional kidnapper’ shirts
Sweet Jumping Hayzeus on a pogo stick, some people are so damn dumb I'm surprised they remember to breathe.

Ms. Christina Sanders, whomever you are and wherever you live, thank you for reporting this egregious sand reprehensible behavior on the part of your former colleagues.

New York Post: Arizona child welfare workers fired for wearing ‘professional kidnapper’ shirts

Multiple employees of the Arizona Department of Child Safety lost their jobs for wearing T-shirts that read “Professional kidnapper,” according to a report.

The bright pink shirts that were apparently worn during work hours led to the firing of several staffers last month, the Arizona Republic reports, citing multiple sources in the agency’s Prescott field office and a former unit supervisor.

The back of the shirts, according to photos obtained by the newspaper, read: “Do you know where your children are?”

One former employee confirmed she was terminated for the shirt, but refused to elaborate or identify herself. Her firing and that of other staffers in Prescott left the field office understaffed — purportedly with just one investigator — to look into complaints of child abuse and neglect, according to the report.

The shirts were a misguided attempt to make light of critics who blast DCS workers who remove children from their families, some who have even accused them of being kidnappers, the Arizona Republic reports.

Christina Sanders, a former DCS unit supervisor, said she saw a photo of the investigators posing in the T-shirts and contacted the agency’s director, claiming it showed some of her former co-workers.

In one photo that appeared to be taken in a parking lot outside the Prescott office, several staffers posed to show both sides of the shirt while one employee wore her work ID badge, according to the report.

“They think they’re so untouchable, they don’t think they can get caught,” Sanders told the newspaper.

Claire Louge, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Arizona, said the message on the shirt “really illuminates that people in the system are biased against parents” in some instances.

A message seeking comment from the agency early Wednesday was not immediately returned, but a spokesman declined to comment late Monday....

Sigh. Is it professional, no, but it is pretty funny. When you see the things that these people have to on a regular basis, then get accused of "kidnapping" or misconduct by people who are guilty of horrific neglect or abuse, sometimes it takes some gallows humor to stay sane. Wearing the shirts at work and taking the picture, probably not the smartest move, but IMO termination is pretty harsh.

I don't know about AZ, but around here it takes something absolutely eggregious for DCS to remove a child. I think the general public looks at DCS with suspicion that they're going to show up and snatch your kid because you spanked them or made some other parenting decision that doesn't fit within societal norms. That's not the case at all...if they're taking a kid out of a home, they have a damn good reason, and they have to be able to back it up in court.

Some people just aren't fit to raise kids. My dad used to work for DCS back in the 90s. He saw some truly horrible stuff. On one occasion he had to pull some kids from an abusive home, and the parent responsible for the abuse accused him and his co-worker of being like the winged monkeys from the Wizard of Oz...flying in and snatching kids. His boss thought that was pretty funny, so he got a small statue of the winged monkeys carrying Dorthy and Toto and put it in their office. I remember seeing it as a kid. It was there for years, nobody said a word.

Society needs to lighten up and focus on the substance of the issue, not just the optics. Are the employees wearing these shirts actually guilty of misconuct or taking children from homes that they shouldn't be removed from? If so, then by all means fire them. But if it's just some inter-office humor between co-workers that helps them deal with the trully horrific stuff they have to contend with on a regular basis, then tell them to lose the shirts and let them get back to work. Social media has turned butthurt and outrage over little things into the national pasttime.

A few days days without pay and an entry in their employee record makes sense to me. It’s an unbelievably stupid thing to have done and we should be angry about it; however, to ruin someone’s life for “doin the group stupid” seems a bit much. Where was their direct supervisor? Perhaps there is more to the story.

I’ve worked with kids on the margins for a long time; for good folks who’ve never seen it they have no idea of what goes on daily out there. It’s difficult to remain professional.

I read the post earlier and decided to wait on stating a response.

I think the T-shirt is funny as all get out.

Is it professional? Nah
Is it off the cuff humor? YEs

Is this the right decade for that shirt? NO

Would it be appropriate 10 years ago when people had a sense of humor? Yes

I have worked with some great CPS employees but over time most have become jaded, and have a dry sense of humor like Police Officers, Troopers, Medical Examiners etc..

I have worked dozens of child abuse cases (suspected and verified) and can attest to how nasty, disgusting and horrific a scene it is.

I would take any homicides, fatalities or violent domestic any day over a CPS case.

In Virginia (unless things have changed in the couple of years I have been gone) it takes an act of god to remove a child from an abusive, meth filled home.

I used to get so pissed off and melt down after hearing the verdict that the POS parents could keep their kids after spending months upon months of documenting, photographing, interviewing the horrific conditions

Some of the people walking in society and wasting good oxygen should not be allowed to have kids or pets. I still think some people should have to be required to get a permit before contemplating having kids.

I have had to take kids from homes forcefully and it is a gut wrenching procedure.

The general public don't know sh*T and has turned being outraged into a hobby for some and a career for others.

The supervisor that reported the picture is probably the biggest POS of all.

we have become a society of the immediately aggrieved

there are some people that wake up every morning who's sole purpose in life is to find disappointment in everything - must be wonderful to wake up every day with no chance of hope

The real travesty is this paragraph right here. You now have an agency that was likely grossly understaffed to begin with (I know our local office is, as well as the one my dad used to work at) left with only one investigator...and it's not like you can train new ones up overnight. So how many kids are now going to endure abuse that they otherwise wouldn't because of a t-shirt?

I get the need to find humor when dealing with the worst of people and situations, such gallows humor is permissible, its an outlet valve. However, if you're gonna give out a tasteless t-shirts, maybe wait until the department picnic or, service project. Wearing it while at work, dealing with a touchy subject, giggling away, doesn't instill much confidence that there's any adults working there.

If you want to be cute and funny, do it off hours. Totally stupid thing to do on the clock. How would you like it, if your wife's gynecologist walks in the room wearing a T-shirt that reads "Professional molester"?

I fall in the “people need to lighten up” camp. If a t-shirt bothers you, you suck at life.

Usually, that crowd starts thinking the real solution is to start killing their customers - and it does start to make sense.

(And, yes, it gets abused. Usually, by public A-holes, not bureaucratic ones.)

Rehire these people, you stupid, weak-kneed bastards.

Rehire these people after they are forced to wear another T shirt all week. I bet the families that have had kids inappropriately removed from the home would have some creative ideas.
Admittedly they have a difficult job with some of the families, but there are times when they wield too much power.JMHO

Funny thing is I bet most people in social services are leftists, so just another wonderful example of the left eating it's own.

It's tough being a professional - you have to put your feelings aside and work, regardless if it isn't fun.

Karen reports people for wearing a fuggn t-shirt! She's probably didn't get invited to drinks after work or to someone's wedding.

Yep. That's some fuckery. But taking those folks out of circulation for the sake of hurt feelings is advanced level fuckery.

I strongly agree. Poor judgement is poor judgement. Makes we wonder about the quality of their other decisions.

If nothing else, they failed to realize how short tempered people are today..... and the fact that employers are looking for a reason to let people go.
