2 Iowa middle schools will require their students take a gun safety course this spring

Two rural Iowa school districts will require middle school students to take a firearms safety course this spring.

Students from the Clarksville and North Butler school districts will learn how to safely handle a gun during a physical education course focusing on hunter safety.

But Joel Foster, the superintendent for both districts, said he hoped the course will prepare students to react in the event of an active shooter situation.

"We've done everything to make (students and district employees) as safe as possible at school with cameras ... locks," he said. "We would like them to be able to deal with a situation that comes up."

During the course, students will use inoperable guns with replica ammunition.

They will learn how to load and unload ammunition and hold and care for firearms, Foster said. They'll also learn how to safely carry a gun and how to recognize when a firearm is loaded.

"We know not all kids are going to hunt," he said. "This is an alternative to sitting on your hands and not doing anything. It's being proactive to handle things the best manner as possible if something occurs. Through education, kids know guns aren't toys."

The hunter safety course is expected to last about a week and will be taught by a naturalist from the Butler County Conservation Board.

Parents can opt to have their children sit out the course.

Foster announced the class in a blog post on the districts' websites. He said Monday that he hasn't received any negative feedback.

Derek Drayer, communications director for the Iowa Firearms Coalition, said he's glad to see the districts require the hunters' safety class.

"I hope politics stay out of it," Drayer said. "Even if you're never going to own a gun, some exposure to that safety aspect is a good thing. While there is a lot of disagreement on gun policy, everyone agrees we want safety."

The course will be required for all seventh- and eighth-grade students in the North Butler district and all eighth-graders in the Clarksville district.

High school students from both districts will have the option of taking a similar hunters' safety course during the evening.

The Clarksville and North Butler school districts are located in rural north-central Iowa, about 125 miles from Des Moines.

Of course it'll drive the hoplophobes crazy, because it might actually help save lives. If lives are saved, it makes it harder for them to push their prohibitionist agenda.

Clearly parents are no longer capable of this so the schools might as well.

Not all parents have the knowledge to teach this at home. My parents certainly didn't, but they did give support when I attended a course given by the American Legion in our small city (bedroom community for NYC).

This. My dad is country as hell, but didn’t own a lot of firearms. My gun handling was self taught mostly in my mid 20’s. This is fantastic and I expect the leftists there will be quietly apoplectic over the whole thing. They’ll be insane over the premise but the fact that it’s being done to promote safety will muzzle them somewhat.

We had Game Wardens come in and teach a hunter safety course at my school at about 7th-8th grade.

Of course by then about 90% of the guys had been hunting for years but it got us out of math and English class.

Great idea, I have done this with my sons...starting at 3-4 years of age.

My 6yo knows what to do if he sees a firearm unsecured.."leave the room and tell an adult"

If all children did we would see fewer needless deaths.

This will solve the issue better than the haters screaming about taking guns.

The progs will scream about this....you can teach johnny and susie that boys can have periods too (serious, a school in the UK is teaching this).... but not gun safety

This is great, I have no issue with this at all, in fact all schools should have such a course.

I would object to if the libs that infest boards of education, start to add 'more rules' to the basic and universal four safety rules of gun handling. Then the stupidity will reign...

The good people of Des Moines and Iowa City must be wetting themselves at the very idea.

I have long held that firearms safety should be taught in the public schools because we now have so many generations of parents who don't know the rules themselves to pass them on to their children. There can be no valid reason to oppose the teaching of firearms safety--merely knowing the safety rules and how to behave if a firearm is encountered (to be safe) in no way promotes hunting or other uses of firearms. Of course, the Libs/Progs aren't equipped to be rational, so they will no doubt attempt to stop this effort (unsuccessfully, one hopes).

It's a good idea in a rural setting, but it would be much more useful in an urban one--most of the firearms "accidents" occur in cities.

In my mind how could someone argue about course on gun safety.

Ask any lib if its safe to ignorant concerning something that could be dangerous.

I already had been taught gun safety when I attended a NRA Safe Hunter class.

Gun safety course in high school is a very good idea...

Uncle Sam taught me gun safety during Army basic training when I was 17.

I got a refresher course in gun safety when I became a Correction Officer.

Hunter's Ed was taught to us in 5th-6th grade. Don't recall if it was elective (probably).

Passing the class got you the chance to go out back from some shooting behind the school. IIRC, they were air rifles with peep sights.

Small SE TX town of about 6,500.

I've always thought we teach sex education, drivers education, there should be gun education. Hunter education reduced gun accidents in the field over time.
