Really Cheap Beer

PASigReally Cheap Beer
A "suitcase" of Keystone beer was my cheap beer of choice during my HS years, I had a hookup that would get us this whenever I wanted if I gave him a little extra $
I honestly think their brewing process was having workers pissing into each can as it came down the line! Good Lord that stuff was AWFUL.

sjtillIn school in Pittsburgh a buddy discovered some beer whose name I forget, you bought it in refillable bottles, incredibly cheap.
Unfortunately I learned that open dark-colored beer bottles with some residual warm beer at the bottom was the perfect medium for raising cockroaches.

I remember “Texas Pride” beer. Someone said it was Lonestar or Pearl seconds. Nasty stuff.
In late 60s, used to buy Ballentines for .79 a 6 pack in Houston. All a 21 yr old could afford. Visited New York City in 73 and surprised to see Ballentines sold as a premium beer in Manhatten A&P.
In late 60s, before light beers, I used to consider Schlitz a treat. Liked the taste. Very flavorfull. Guess the intoduction and use of light beers changed taste preferences. Schlitz tasted awful last time I tried one about 20 yrs ago.
Schmitz was a good beer in the 70’s. It was Budweiser’s biggest competition. Schlitz changed the recipe and used corn syrup instead of malted barley, and changed the way they fermented the beer. It crushed the company. It was impossible for them to recover.
So the schlitz you had ages ago, and the one from 20 years ago, are probably two very different beers.

maxdogInteresting info Beancooker. I always wondered what happened to Schlitz. They were a top beer for awhile in the late 60s early 70s. Then they faded. Remember the “Gusto” campaign? I’ve seen good products ruined by changes to formulas. Usually when a smaller company is bought by another co that decides to maximize profits by a production or formula change.

jhe888Beer is not a thing where cheapness should be the defining characteristic.

Snake207Walgreens used to sell a beer called "Big Flats Lager". Brewed exclusively for them.
It was $2.99 for a sixer.
Tried it a few times - tasted kinda like Coors Light. Not bad for $0.50 a can.
THE worst beer I ever tried was Schaffer Light. Snuck one or two as a kid. Made Bud Light taste like heaven.

71 TRUCKFor us it used to be Piels Draft cans. $6.99 a case back in the 80s. It was horrible but it was cheap.
We also had Billy beer. I don't remember how much it cost but I don't think it was that expensive.
