My wife's new(er) Sentra came with a dealer installed GPD tracker. We like it so much I'd like to add one to my CRV. I am a mechanic by trade and can handle the hiding/installation part but have no idea waht is out there that is good.

Are any of you using an aftermarket tracker or have recommendations for one?

Thanks

Hmmm. Yet another leash, amid an ambush of other leashes.

I have nothing of value to share on GPS Trackers, but I wonder what this trend means for us.

I've considered those issues. I like the theft recover aspects of it. I am a bit concerned about possibly incrminating myself. But I'm sure the on-board PCM/IC Module will already do that for me.

Your point is valid, of course. It's just sad for me to see our freedoms handed away so easily. I'm probably a far worse offender than you will ever be.

In life, I think we must start to fear what freedoms we give away. Fear, in all of it's persuasiveness, could save us from slavery. Even fear of being in fear seems pragmatic, if that makes any sense.

"Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave." -Roy Batty, Blade Runner

Anyway, please excuse my ridiculous musings. Back to the matter at hand. I'll use my google-foo and see what is out there in this market.

Holy GPS Trackers, Batman. There is no end to what is available.

What features are you looking for?

What is your budget?

Do you want remote start and shutdown, and such?

Ones with any type of quality seem to start at $79.99.

After much research, I decided on the Nano 5 at BrickHouseSecurity.com Just got it yesterday, so I haven't installed it yet, just charged it.

Of course, what possible other use would there be for such a device. Sometimes you cannot use your key fob to direct you.

I had one from Brickhouse about 7-8 years ago. It was about the size of a Tic-Tac box and worked great. Only problem was there was a monthly subscription fee of around $200. Wasn't worth it.

I'd imagine nowadays they have them that you could just turn on when you want it/need it.

I don't understand why you would want one of these

you have insurance?

let the cops find your car - you're paying for it in your taxes

just one more tether that is entirely optional

You are correct. It is the cops job to find my car once it's reported missing. However, historically, the sooner it's found the less damage there usually is. It would be nice to call in the stolen car report and instead of saying "my 2004 Honda CRV, FL tag 2A RKBA has been stolen", I could say "my 2004 Honda CRV, FL tag 2A RKBA has been stolen. It has a GPS tracker installed and the vehicle has been disabled at Kennedy and Tampa street."

Yes, it may be another "tether" but I like the piece of mind knowing I can locate it, follow it live on a google maps, disable the car once it's safely stopped, etc. I am still in the research stage and haven't decided if all of those nice features are worth the "tether" negatives.

I assumed the query was about GPS devices to assist in navigation. In the past I've just used my laptop with mapping software and a GPS receiver.

Yeah, Sorry I should have been more specific. The main features I am looking for are Live tracking, "geofences" alerts and SIM card slot. I already have a SIM card for a teblet that I'm not using. My budget right now is around $200 or less.

The only other feature I would like is the ability to temporarily disable the vehicle when it stops moving.I can hide the device and weave it's wiring thru the wiring harness loom etc. I'd prefer and internal antenna but an external is not a deal breaker.

I am mainly interested if members here have one installed and their experiences with it. I'm looking for reliabilty and accuracy.

You could do a Bait Car video, Florida style.
