But sometimes the authorities back off rather than gin up publicity. You can rest assured though, that if they thought the Unibomber was hiding in a church, they would have barged in in a New York minute.

Churches are not public places, even though most churches don't choose to exclude anyone. They certainly could if they wanted to. If a church wanted to insist on it, they could certainly require the authorities to get a warrant.
