KMitch200I just took the monitoring.
I can probably find the amount of $ that will be sent for cash claims in my couch.

No, but I'd rather retain the right to sue if something happens than end up with $6. Regardless, I'm waiting until close to the January deadline.

Should I opt out?
Opting out of the settlement means you don't forfeit your rights against Equifax and can still file your own lawsuit against the company.
Those who can prove that they took a hit above $125 can get $25 for every hour spent pulling their lives together in the wake of an Equifax-related identity theft. That deal is capped at $20,000. Don't opt out if you want that option.
If you think your personal damages as a result of the data breach exceed $20,000, talking with your attorney about a separate suit could be an option. But you'd need to make sure you opt out of this settlement class first.

Scooter123At any point do they ask where you were BORN? If so you have just entered your complete social security number.
Because the first 3 digits of the social security number are the "area code" for the location you were born. Note, the size of the area is determined by the population density, so in an area like Wyoming the 3 digit code may encompass the entire state and in New York City may just be one square block.
I've stopped counting.

I believe this is incorrect. One of the members of Sig Forum used to be a regional manager for Social Security and perhaps he will be along. In the past there was some linkage with the first few digits. From the Social Security site:
Until 1972, the urea number indicated the location
(State, territory, or possession) of the Social Security office
that issued the number. When the Social Security
numbering system was developed, one or more area
numbers were allocated to each State based on the
anticipated number of issuances in the State (table 1).
Because an individual could apply for an SSN at any Social
Security office, the area code did not necessarily
indicate where the person lived or worked. Since 1972,
the Social Security Administration has been issuing
SSN’s centrally from its headquarters in Baltimore.

Yep, seems I get notices from MyIdCare about once a month and makes me nervous. Luckily every time I check, it's sex offender monitoring notices. Got nothing to do with me personally or financially. Wish I could turn the offender notices off. Seems I remember reading a good while back in another thread, that it was possible to turn it off, but you have call and "complain" about it ... or something.

kz1000I filed for the $125 & 10 hours of my time since I had to waste time freezing my credit. The only time my credit needs run is every 3 years when I lease a car.

The above citation is accurate. The first 3 digits were determined by the location of the social security office where the card application was completed, not where you were born. If you were born in Hawaii, but applied for your first card in, say New York, you would get a NY number, not a Hawaii number. This is no longer true. The first three digits of new SS numbers currently being issued are completely random.

mikeyspizzaTo qualify for the $125 you have to attest that you already have credit monitoring for at least the next 6 months. I have this due to the OPM data breech several years ago. My wife does not have credit monitoring, so she qualifies for free credit monitoring and not the $125.
Next question - Will we receive a 1099 or whatever and have to report the $125 as income?

MagnumUIf you initiated credit freezes with Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, Innovis or ChexSystems, don't forget to claim as money spent any fees they required.

Same here. Wow, for a change I ended up with money in my pocket thanks to SigForum, rather than the other way around

When did you submit a claim?

I received a 1099 for the $10 I got on the Remington 870 barrel settlement years ago.
Since you are not going to get $125 checks the credit monitoring is the better deal in all likelihood.

Sometimes that happens. If I remember correctly the requirement is anything over 600 dollars requires a 1099. I do not send a 1099 to people who do independent contracting with me unless it is over that amount. I am following the advice of my accountant.

Thanks. They way my memory has been lately, it will be a surprise whether it arrives in August or January.

clayflingythingyJust read that millions have signed up for the $125. FTC is advising people on their blog to sign up for credit monitoring. I have not gone to FTC myself to confirm this.

Many folks likely already have a credit monitoring service.
And many folks just want cash now. That is why JG Wentworth is rich!!!!!!!
I met someone who went the JG Wentworth route on a 1 million medical settlement got 125,000 cash!
