Part number MOB 122075 at Napa. (Mobil 1). If Liqui Moly makes a 5w50 - that would be great too.

Interesting question on which viscosity.

I'm one of the very early members of BITOG and a contributor there so you can take it for what it's worth, good or bad.

Redline makes a 5w-50 that's marketed just toward the Mustangs, albeit the new ones, however it will be more than adequate for your 302 if you need a highly viscous oil. The specs are indicative of a well-built and very robust oil that you could easily track with no worries for your engine.

That's not the only sufficient oil for you car but it's a recommendation that is more than suitable. It's not cheap oil but if that viscosity is required, your needs will be met.

I have found that an oil change gets tricky when I have to swap two and a half gallons.

I have a '70 Boss 302 that I have used Valvoline full synthetic 20W-50 oil in forever. My crankcase only holds 6 qts. plus 1 for the filter. You want a higher viscosity oil when the oil temp goes up, and you are squeezing it to the redline!!

Motor - 5W50 (don't let anyone talk you out of 5W50 to their magical 10W40 or some other nonsense. And don't use the Motorcraft 5W50 as it shears to a 5W40 in about 1K miles)

Rear Differential - 75W140 GL5 (this has friction modifiers in it and Torsen has said it is ok to have some in it - I have also added a little.) If you have limited slip and not the Torsen, then friction modifiers are required for the clutch packs.

Transmission - MTL (75W80) (I did not switch to any of the Ford recommendations after the first swap)

Brake Fluid - RL-600

Coolant - Ford

For oil filter I use the Ford Racing CM-6731-FL820. It's a bit more expensive than the standard FL-500S but it is a nice filter.

I have a local shop that has all those fluids so I like to get it from them, but they are all available online. I would use Amsoil if I couldn't get Redline.

Brilliant marketing by Mobil if anything. They provide the factory fill on multiple vehicles and people say "it's factory fill for the Corvette so it must mean it's the best oil" and go out and buy it.

I’m going to recommend Motul oil; my Porsche mechanic didn’t like Mobil 1, in spite of the fact Porsche recommended it. Do some research on Motul before you make your purchase. Yes, they do have a 5w50.

Castrol (which is BP). Pennzoil and Quaker State (both are made by Shell). Shell. Valvoline. Mobil 1.

I tend to use Castrol, but from what I can read from a variety of sources, the others on this list are all good too. Since most brands have non-synthetic, semi-synthetic, synthetic, extended mileage, etc., variants -- it is probably best to go with the top of the line synthetic in any particular brand.

The most important thing about any oil might be the line on the label that says something like: "Meets API SP/SN PLUS, ILSAC GF-6, ACEA A1/B1, ACEA C5, GM dexos1 Gen 2, Meets Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 and WSS-M2C946-B1, Meets engine test requirements of Chrysler MS 6395 and 13340" which is what Castrol EDGE says. That covers my 2021 Jeep. Your owner's manual should say which standard pertains specifically to your vehicle (if your vehicle is an older one, then I would go with whatever standards the company lists for its new vehicles).

Some of the less common brands -- AMSOIL, Royal Purple, Motul, Liqui Moly, etc. -- have strong adherents and even true-believers, but I have no personal experience with them.

I would stay away from Amazon oil, Wal-Mart oil, Brand X oil, etc., unless I could find out exactly where they were sourcing the product they re-label with their brand (which may be from a major brand refinery or may be recycled...).

The internet is your friend, and also your enemy, in looking for something like "the best oil for my car." But it is pretty clear that today's synthetics are a lot better than the stuff we had just a few decades ago.

Final comment: Many car dealerships (and SpeedyLube) do oil changes using remanufactured (recycled) oil in 55 gallon drums... even for their best "synthetic." It meets the manufacturer's specifications, right? And it is exactly as good as the API certification that comes with it, which the consumer will never get to see. So I tend to buy my own oil from a discount store and take it to the dealer with me...

Final/final comment: The internet tells me that Conoco/Phillips and S-Oil (South Korea) produce Motorcraft Oil for Ford. It seems to enjoy a good reputation too.

Thanks for the info. Nobody can talk me out of manufacturer spec, but pretty easily out of factory brand (at least where ford is concerned). I've never been a huge fan of the Motorcraft oil. It always seemed super cheap quality to me.

My car has the Torsen limited slip. (It also has the Recaro seats but that's irrelevant to this conversation.)

Ford Racing, eh? I'd tried the K&N filter, and was going to try the Mobil 1 this time with the V6 (was due because I had a road trip to TX for my brother's wedding this past weekend), but then I traded up.

So now I've heard Amsoil and Redline.

This is going to be one hell of a fun car, can't wait until I get the clutch game figured out.

Not sure what you mean it’s a no go because you don’t use the assistant on your phone.

The unit does everything sync does but better and more.

I never responded to this. It may replace sync, but unless I'm reading the page wrong it replaces it with a Google Assistant or Siri. Whether that entails a dumb head for the phone's onboard assistant or something like an embedded Google Home, I don't know.

I only use Mobil 1 in my cars.

The Nissan Frontier truck has over 300,000 miles on it.

Even though it's a 10k mile oil, I change at 5000 no matter what they recommend.

My BMW recommended 15k oil change intervals, but I changed at 5k and the insides of the engine looked brand new when I sold it at 200k.

Dang! Feels like it did when reading a thread about synthetic vs dyno oil on a Harley Board!

Ford says 5W-50, you run 5W-50, Mobil1, Redline, Motorcraft et al, are similar oils any of these should be good.

The key is 5W-50

Close, but not quite.

My 3 second google search showed that the oil for this engine MUST meet Ford WSS-M2C931-C spec.

Not all 5W50 oils will meet this spec. Probably less than half of the 5W50 oils on the market would meet this spec.

I didn't look to see if Castrol, Mobil, Pennzoil or any of the big oil companies have an oil that can meet this spec. Amsoil most likely does not meet the spec. They might "self certify" and say that the oil meets the spec, but they hardly ever submit the oil for testing and get it included on the official approved oil list.

Do some searching, see what oils meet the spec, and then buy one of those.

Motorcraft is an excellent oil. I would have no problem running it. And, it meets the spec.

I like Redline for motor oils. OEM for trans and diffs.
