Caught in a loop |
Last weekend I replaced my 2013 Mustang v6 with a time capsule of a 2013 Boss 302 in School Bus Yellow (no, seriously, 1,656 miles on it when I picked it up). It's an absolute joy to drive, even with it being my first stick. I'm aware of the issues these things can have (namely high rpm lockout and other issues inherent to the MT82 transmission), and their simple yet typically expensive fixes. I'll get to those in due time. I plan on replacing all of the fluids one by one as I get time. Motor oil - let's start here. The Boss 302 supplemental manual calls for 8.5 quarts of full synthetic 5W-50 oil. I'm normally not one to complain, but it seems like my options are pretty limited as to what I can get locally. From the looks of it, manufacturer recommended is going to cost an arm and leg, and I have limited experience with anything other than Mobil 1. What about transmission and diff fluids? Those should be changed too, down the road. The brakes are getting DOT 4 (I'm waiting on that because I haven't decided if I'm going to put a Shelby iso clutch reservoir in; if I do that I'm going to replace it all then). For coolant I'm just going to stick with manufacturer spec as I still have a jug of the stuff left from my old car. For some context, I don't plan on tracking it yet (again, still learning how to drive it properly), but when I get ready it is something I would like to do at least once. So, for the time being, just some "spirited" highway driving on top of my normal daily activities.This message has been edited. I don't see a 5W50 on Mobil 1's site, but they do have a synthetic gear lube. Frankly, Amsoil has everything for your Mustang U Code and Amsoil is top notch. I'm a Mobil 1 user so this isn't coming from an Amsoil fanboy. I worked on cars for years, and most all the major brands are fine or the same thing. Castrol was my favorite but changing it and the filter was the important thing. Most definitely not true. I have 25+ years at a large, multinational oil company. First off, to my knowledge zero refineries make motor oil. Refineries make lube oil base stocks and nearly every one does it. It’s a fungible commodity made to an industry spec. Lube blending/packaging plants blend motor oil but they don’t refine anything. Their automated assembly lines blend the base stocks and additives as they’re packaging them. One blending plant can make a multitude of different grades, qualities, and sizes of motor oil. Looks like Amazon has 5W-50 Mobil 1 oil for around $57 a 6 QT pack. I don't think I've ever seen a 5w-50 around here locally. | |||

The local trusted shop used Pennzoil PZ-167 filter and Quaker State bulk fully synthetic in December. The Pennzoil-Quaker State Company is a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company. The oil change before that, it took me 21 months to drive 6,000 miles ... my thinking is that I could have swapped the filter and driven another 6,000 miles on that same oil. Last month I used a Mobil1 M1-113 filter and Napa (Valvoline) full-synthetic (quarts were 1/2 price over 07/04 weekend, and I bought a case). A good filter plus frequency of change might be more important than actual brand of oil. Just not the cheapest. | |||

As mentioned above Mobil 1 5W-50 is available on Amazon even though it’s not listed on Mobil 1’s website. I don’t know if they are not producing it any more or what.. Back in the day when a xW-50 oil was spec’d it was either for a highly modified supercharged or turbocharged engine where the turbo could spin at something like 30K rpm and that could lead to oil shearing OR the engine machining tolerances weren’t that good and a thicker oil was needed between the relatively larger gaps in mating surfaces. I would think that neither of those circumstances are present in your engine. Having said that, I will also say that oil developments have been substantial in the last decade or so. In one of my older turbo Porsche’s the original factory recommendation was 15W-50. However, several years ago Porsche changed their oil recommendation to Mobil 1 0W-40 for all their engines and that is what I’ve been using in all our performance vehicles with out issue. Amsoil will fit your needs!! If I may suggest this as Ford put a monstrosity of an audio system in these cars. Install is straight forward and all plug and play. I'm sticking with manufacturer spec. I could probably get away with a lighter oil, but to me it's not worth trying. From looking at the Boss 302 supplemental and at the regular manual, both the 302 and the GT with the track package are spec'd for 5w-50, with the GT needing 0.5qt less oil. I'm a big fan of Lubrication Engineer's oil running their LE8130 10W30 synthetic in my 2003 Honda S2000's high revving (9k) engine since buying the car new. It was highly recommended by a Tribologist who was also a sports car enthusiast. They don't offer a 5W50, only a 5W40. Their stuff isn't cheap by any measure though.
